and former state department egypt officer, joel rubin. joel, i'll get to you in a minute. want to get to mr. khalil over there. it looks to me like the united states might be a little better off in the short run, because we now have a government run by the military which seems to be a stabilizing force against a government that looked like it was moving more and more islamists, and, therefore, at some point anti-american. how do you read it. >> it's hard to read where u.s. interests lie. you do have the end of the muslim brotherhood leadership. although, it was never really overtly anti-american. the u.s. military, which is now in charge has strong ties to the americans. but the muslim brothers played nice with washington, they said all the right things with israels. they weren't anti-american or anti-american interests. the incoming government, whatever form it takes will be less threatening to american citizens. and that's a good thing. but there is also a precedent with an elected president being ousted for bad politics especially after one year. that may cause a proble

thank you, joel rubin. >> thank you. >> we'll be right back after this. >>> let me finish tonight with this. this was a busy news weekend especially for a holiday. much of it tragic. the horrible airline crash in san francisco, the violent and unsettled situation in egypt. the shooting of 67 people over the extended weekend in chicago, alone. and yet when i read the sunday "washington post" online, i noted the most popular item was a column written by robert mccartney about the latest caper of a man who bills himself as the phantom planter. henry doctor is his name. he's a 52-year-old green thumb good samaritan who for the last three decades has been surreptitiously planting flowers on four continents in an effort to beautify public spaces. he views his work as performance art. never has he encountered a problem, that is until he planted 11,000 morning glories, cardinal flours and vines at a metro station in the nation's capital. his plan was they would bloom in 167 otherwise baron flower box in colors red, white and blue from august until october. metro wasn't happy. doctor was threat

. >> i want to go to joel rubin on that. we now have seen tunanesia, libya, egypt twice.dn't bashar al assad get the message perhaps the arab spring has bled into an arab summer that could lap into his country, as well? >> the situation in his country is deplorable as mark points out. it's horrific to watch. what we will see clearly as well as a contrast a stark one at that where the egyptian people are cheering the egyptian army for doing what they believe is in their best interests supposed to in syria where the army is massacring its people. it's testament to a lot of different factors. just reading tea leaves here but seeing secretary of defense hagel going into the white house or hearing of that, his communications with the military have been robust. certainly that's a long relationship that the u.s. has had with the egyptian military and it's likely paying dividends in terms of understanding what's happening on the ground. the syrian situation where assad believes that he would have some moral high ground to call out other leaders in the region though is despicable.
