steinem is the face of the feminist movement and was dubbed "the leading icon of american feminism" by joelleattinger in "time" magazine. she solidified her feminist legacy by co-founding "ms. magazine" in 1972. more than 40 years later, she is still a consulting editor to the magazine now published by the feminist majority foundation. ms. steinem celebrated the magazine's 40th anniversary right here at the national press club last year. she said then it was the right place to do it since she was also the first woman to appear as a national press club luncheon speaker after women were finally admitted to the club's membership in 1971.
