let's get some more on all of this, joining us now cnn legal analyst, joey jackson. to you that authorities are seeking his help three weeks into the search effort? >> i think that he could have certainly helped sooner and he could have done it voluntarily weeks ago. you know, look, authorities have a vested interest in bringing this to justice. i get and understand that. in doing that, they're going to exhaust every resource. i think that's a resource in the event that he wanted to be helpful, who could be very helpful with respect to the inclinations of his son, with respect to the trails he knows his son to frequent, with respect to what his son does, when he does it, how he does it. it would be a bevy of information in the event that he's truthful, in the event that he really has a willingness to help, and in the event that, again, he's candid with respect to what he tells authorities. but you know, it's good he's helping now, but certainly i think if he helped earlier it would have been much more significant. >> we also know and you know this, that laundrie's pa

. >>> let's bring in cnn legal analyst joey jackson to figure out the law. federal law trumps state laws. what happens? does the biden administration mandate supersede and over what period of time? >> yeah, good morning to you, jim. good morning to you, erica. listen, the reality here is exactly as you stated. we know we have a series of states in this country that are governed by governors and we have a state legislature. that being said, states generally can deal with and handle their own affairs. by way of example, you have states very strong with respect to gun control, states that have lax gun control laws, states related to death penalties put in effect and states that don't. my point is states can control their internal affairs unless as you said there is a federal mandate or some federal law that otherwise is in place. the doctrine called the supremacy clause, right. the supremacy clause means, not to get too legalese, but if the federal government says it, that's what we're doing, called the doctor of preempting. what the government does to protect

let's bring in joey jackson, always good to have you, brother. thing they are looking for right now, some trace that the kid is actually there. i have to believe that even if they did find remnants of a camp site that it's very different than finding him. but this is what the search is all about, right? >> yeah, there's no question about it, and so obviously you may find remnants of a camp site but the question becomes whose camp site. it's a large world and so we can't automatically presume and assume that it's his. i think investigators in my view, chris, are doing three separate things. number one, obviously they are still really dealing with the autopsy issues relating to the first point of issue here, the victim here, gabby petito, information relating to her, what they found, what the autopsy shows, what the crime scene shows. i think number two, chris, they're presenting that information before the grand jury and three, to circle back to your initial point with respect to finding brian laundrie, they want to find them, they need to find hi
