. >>> let's speak to criminal defense attorney and cnn legal analyst joey jackson.been involved in a lot of trials. have you ever seen, witnessed, heard of a defense attorney sharing a cell phone -- the contents of a cell phone including messages which it appears he lied about with the prosecution? have you ever seen it? >> yes, so, jim, good morning to you. so what happens is is that you have all kind of mistakes that happen in trial, but just put this in context. before a trial happens, you don't have trial by ambush in this country. both sides, whether it be a criminal or as this trial is a civil trial, a process of discovery. and in that process, both sides are allowed to make requests. when you step into the courtroom, everyone should be conversant with the facts, the issues, the circumstances, the text messages, the email, the surveillance, it should not be a surprise. in this case, again, in context, those text messages were asked for. they were asked for a long time ago and they were told that they didn't exist, that there are no such text messages relating

joining me now is cnn legal analyst and criminal defense attorney joey jackson. to be clear, vanessa bryant is suing l.a. county for emotional distress. what do you make of her testimony? and was it enough to prove that she has been through quite a lot of emotional distress? >> yeah. amara good morning to you. i think very compelling, very emotional, very impactful. and so it's not only her testimony, remember, although she testified at the very end before the defense began the case, but it's about the additional testimony that we have seen in conjunction with that, amara, and what was that? it was about the notion that you can have these photos that were taken and shared on multiple devices. one deputy sharing them with a person that he did not even know who they were. the title, anything else. you had instances of them being shared to others in public, one specifically in a bar, another at a cocktail party. so now you have after that mr. chester, her co-plaintiff in this case, he testifies about how it affected him, his daughter peyton 13, the twin boys he is le

joining me to discuss, cnn legal analyst and criminal defense attorney joey jackson.e parents had asked for up to $150 million. they got $4 $4 million. pal other sandy hook parents are suing and this may be an effort to parcel out the move money, l some for them. does that make sense to you? >> good morning to you. i think my good friend paul callan has it right. i think in assessing this case you have to look at not only in this jurisdiction, texas, but you have to look at what the other families are enduring. we know there are two pending lawsuits in connecticut. certainly alex jones has made claims to the limitations of his -- the money he has available. and in the event you issue an award that is so excessive, we already know he's filed for bankruptcy in an effort to protect himself from further liability, what would that do? and the jury certainly could have been of mind to think about that. hey, if we award something that is so excessive, and he's already protecting assets, could it foreclose the parties in connecticut that are suing him? that makes sense. but w

with us now, defense attorney and cnn analyst joey jackson. joey, let's start with the money. parents had to endure these torturous lies for so many years, and the money is the best and only way to get alex jones to pay up literally and figura turley. they had asked for $150 million. they got $45 million. is that a big win? why do you think the jury sennsettled on that number? >> it's huge. good morning to you, am rachlt what happened, to be clear, there are a number of phases. we know a default was issued in october. what does that mean? it means he would not provide discovery and information of the other parties, he would not participate in the litigation, and as a result the jury could not make a decision based on the merits because he was not all in. with that said, he was said to be liable by default. then the case moves on to the damages portion. the first instance the jury has to determine is compensatory damages. they're designed to compensate you for your out-of-pocket losses and expenses. they came back, that is, the jury, and said it would be $4.1 million. excuse me

joining me now joey jackson and former federal prosecutor jessica roth. joey, reporting this morning that the fbi took 12 boxes of stuff out of mar-a-lago when they searched it monday. does that seem like a lot? >> look, anything, right, would seem like a lot when it furthers a criminal investigation. we don't know how large the boxes are, how many documents are within those boxes. i think, though, to be misled by the notion that it simply dealt with declassified documents i think would be misleading. i think there is a lot more here that we have to connect the dots to. is there any information in there with respect to january 6th that would further the notion of what he was doing, who he was communicating with, any documents centered around that. so, you know, the fact is that we are in unchartered waters here, right? who goes to a president's residence to take documents? in my view, john, i think the issue here is that indictment -- and i will say it -- i think it's imminent as it relates to the president. look at the timing and everything else. i think

you are about to hear from legal analyst joey jackson.nt set of challenges because of the law in the state of texas that caps the amounts that are awarded to victims. >> although the jury awarded that amount in punitive damages, there is a statutory cap, amara, in texas. that statutory cap limits the damages to $750,000 per, right, plaintiff. so ultimately it will be $1.5 million. this is not the end of the road. this is one particular case. there are other cases pending in connecticut, and those families certainly deserve relief. >> reporter: elie honig, one of our other legal analysts, bringing up another important point as far as what could potentially happen next after alex jones' attorneys file an objection to the final outcome here from the jury. basically saying here would could come next is counterargument that the state law in texas, it basicallies against their constitutional right for the plaintiffs to be able to go to trial and have no limits in the amount that is awarded. this is an argument that has succeeded in other states
