criminal defense attorney joey jackson joins me now.ers you have defended complaints facing similar charges on the state level. this is federal. but you have interesting perspective on this. look, you have administration officials saying -- and i should note that there are not currently any americans serving prison time solely for simple federal marijuana charges, but the number that had been charged with this as a crime on the federal level between '92 and 2001 was north of 6,500 people. how significant is this move by the administration? >> yeah, poppy, i think it's very significant to the point of at the state level defending them, new york of course being one of about 20 states now that recognizes marijuana for recreational use and doesn't prosecute it and as a prosecutor i remember prosecuting these, too, but even before new york removed that impediment the matter in which it was handled was a lot different meaning you would be getting a marijuana acd, just stay out of trouble, you are good to go. that's important because, remember

here with me, -- joey jackson and david urban. council to my left here, i want to know -- tell me your defense chops here, what is your reaction? overriding what you heard? >> listen, my reaction is to talk to defend. yes, defense council of course, i do what i do proudly. but you want to defend humanity, you want to defend what's right what's appropriate. and i think what's appropriate and understanding police have a job, an important part of that job is interdicting jugs and doing what they have to do. when you do it in a way that's discriminatory, that's targeted, that does not have a basis in fact, right, we deal in facts in our business. as the fabulous prosecutor that you were, right, it's about the evidence. it's about the proof. and when you're stopping people just because, you happen to be african american, and by the way, i say that because of that, you have some background in drugs this is wrong it shouldn't happen. i think goodness that they're using their great platform in writing this wrong. >> what do you think, dav

joining us now, he's chomping at the bit to weigh in on this issue, cnn legal analyst joey jackson, alyssaah griffin and toby marcus are back with us. first of all, joey, arbitrary and capricious, his point was look, you pull this back from the private sector employees like an athlete or a musician, but public workers, you said no. >> absolutely. so, so there has to be some uniformity, right. when you make rules, the rules have to apply to everyone, and they should apply to everyone in a rational way. you can't, for economic reasons say, oh, baseball season is starting, okay. so as a result of that, we're going to make an exemption for private employers and athletes, as you noted. but one comes to those who are first responders, those who have dawned the uniform and assist in the city, when it's collecting trash or putting out fires or maintaining our jail system, the reality is that it cannot be arbitrary. laura, it cannot be capricious. and i think the judge got it right. you read the statement, of course, from the lot apartment, we're going to appeal, this is outrageous. but the reasoni

joey jackson and drew griffin, who's done a lot of reporting on this, let's talk a little bit about what's joey, what message did this jury send with this very, very powerful verdict today? >> you know, wolf, they sent the message of truth. they sent a message of accountability. this is what truth looks like. we've lived in a society where lies, should than the norm? should you an family who lost children in this case, adult relatives who lost 26 in total, have lies spread over a decade to denigrate you even further, to emotionally disturb you, traumatize you? there was one instance of testimony where there was a description of how there were people at a gravesite urinating on it and otherwise threatening to dig it up because all of this was a hoax. at the end of the day what this jury said is, that's unacceptable. i think the numbers spoke volumes as to their view with respect to the alex jones conspiracy theories that he's been spreading for far too long. >> drew, jones says he does not have money to pay these enormous damages. but you have extensive reporting about the terns of millions

i also want to bring in cnn legal analyst paul cowen and joey jackson.do you make of the verdict these jurors reached today, life in prison without the possibility of parole? >> it was really a shocking development, i thought, because here you have a young man who pled guilty. he admitted to killing 17 people. he admitted to attempted murder charges against 17. he never asserted an insanity defense of any kind. and yet in the face of that the jury found not only was this a cold calculated premeditated and cruelest kind of murder you could possibly imagine but that the mitigating circumstances were absolutely minimal as far as the evidence was and yet they handed down such a light sentence. i think everybody who looked at the case thought there would be a death penalty. and the second thing that i thought was very surprising was with so many victims, with so many families affected by this the jury didn't spend longer to try to reach this conclusion. a minority of these jurors really dictated this sentence. even if only one juror wanted -- did not want the
