officer johannas mehserle waking up a free man. lawyers say mehserle -- the former officer they say, hopes to be able to live in the bay area now that his jail sentence is over. lawyers say mehserle has reun e reunited with his girlfriend and young son, hopes to get a better job. what that will be is up in the air. mehserle was convicted last year of killing unarmed b.a.r.t. passenger oscar grant on a platform at the fruitvale b.a.r.t. station new years day, 2009. >> fallout in oakland where protesters filed a suit against the oakland police department saying officers violated their civil rights when they gathered to protest, mehserle's sentence back in 2010. police arrested 150 people during that protest. none of them were charged but the lawyers filed a class action suit anyway, claiming the protesters were mistreated. >> the police corralled them and refused to give them an opportunity to leave, and in mass arrested them. then treated them miserably as punishment for exercising their rights. >> the oakland city attorney's office
