popes john xxiii and john paul ii.tioned earlier, delia, that john paul ii had this great devotion to the communion of saints, and of course, that's right. you'll remember in one of his private chapels in the apostolic palace, when he had the murals on the walls done, he brought in an eastern orthodox artist, who did this mural that showed the communion of saints, you know, through time, and that when you stood in that space, you stood shoulder to shoulder surrounded by this heavenly host of saints. so, we're also engaging in communion in that sense here today. >> well, and i was thinking that one of the saints that has a thread running through this day is st. francis of assisi. obvious reasons for pope francis, but also john xxiii, before the start of the second vatican council, went to assisi in pilgrimage to pray to st. francis for his help with the second vatican council and pope john paul ii use assisi as a play where he held interreligious prayer days, which also tried to unify. so, there's a kind of interesting

john paul xxiii. almost more than 1 million visitors in rome, and many made their way to the vatican. al jazeera is live among the crowds in rome. nick, is the vatican ready for all of these people? >> reporter: well, morgan, there are certainly a lot of crowds braving the rain this afternoon. behind me there's no one here anymore. there are thousands of pilgrims in st. peter's square, but now it's empty. it's being filled with all of the chairs and all of the preparations for tomorrow's historic event. it is historic. we have never seen what we're going to see in the 2,000-year history of the catholic church. two popes sainted at the same time. we get a real sense of positive momentum, real sense of energy as we talk to all of the pilgrims who have come here. they're here to see john paul xxiii and celebrate him and especially they're here to celebrate john paul ii. there's a sense they're here to celebrate one of the most popular popes in the 20th century. he only died nine years ago. nine years in

pope john xxiii and john paul ii both honored in front of a packed crowd. for more on this let's turn to raymond flynn, the former ambassador to the vatican and former mayor of boston. so great to have you here. what was it like to be there today, ambassador? >> well, i've known john paul ii for many years, long before he even became pope but to be an actual witness to this extraordinary historic event, it was so moving for me and for people in boston and the united states and all over the world. he was a legend, and when i saw the picture this morning of cardinal raggtzinger embracing pope francis to commemorate john paul ii and xxiiird. one of the greatest scenes i've ever seen. >> as far as what i was taught as a young boy growing up. was an extraordinary day here in rome. >> a lot of people have a question the speed within which john paul ii has been made a saint and can you explain how the process works. >> there's so much recorded history about john paul ii going back to september 1st, 1939. when nazi occupiers came into poland and the role that john

[ singing ] . >> the connonisation ceremonies are the same for more than a century. john paul's blood and a piece of john xxiii's skin presented as relics. they helped to revere them as saints, and reminding everyone to be saints is to be human. >> only saints go to heaven. we are meant for this. we are built and created to become saints. we need to understand that the spiritual life and the holily life is not that far off. . >> there are critics of today's dual canonization. for these faithful today was an unprecedented ceremony - two popes, two saints, and 2,000 years the church has never done this before. >> the pilgrims in the front row waited more than 12 hours to be there. they said it was worth the wait because this had never happened in the church's history and predicted it would never happen again. >> we'd talk about this, and there's a lot of criticism inside and out

pope john paul ii will be elevated along with pope john i.veryone remembers pope john paul ii, but it didn't take him long to be elevated this way. >> there is some controversial surrounding that as well. john paul ii, the polish pope born in 1 1920. they say don't they com say comh the moment cometh the man? reagan era, margaret thatcher, they were all around together at the same time bringing down the iron curtain and pope john paul ii had a hand in that. you see pictures of him now. he was very handsome, wonderful broad smile, and people loved him very much. catholics loved him very much. he reigned 25 years and a lot of people in the catholic church welcomes his elevation to st. hood. they praise him now. >> let me ask you this question. there are people who disagree, and they say--john paul ii did not do enough about the sex abuse scandal during his papacy. >> it is a very fair point that a lot of people in the catholic church raise even today. and of course it is very swift for someone to become a hope if they have a selection of miracl

john xxiii and pope john paul ii who represent different aspects of the church.ope john ii put the church into the modern world, help defeat communism as perhaps no other individual did, was responsible because of poland and what he did there for cracking the wall and in the soviet system and, you know, the pope wants this recognized, it had already been set in motion by benedict and doing the two together demonstrates a kind of unity that he wants to show the world this new pope. >> and then pope -- john paul xxiii, what was his distinction because these are two very different popes. >> first of all of, these are both radical figures in the history of the church who accomplished amazed things both within the church and within the secular world. and one of the things that john xxiii did, he convened the vatican council which did away with a lot of latin mass, among other things. but moved to make the church more accessible to catholics who saw it as hide bound in many ways in its traditions, in aspects of its theology and, of course, john paul ii saw some of what

john? >> how does china fit into all of this? >> reporter: john, china, that's a great question.aid if north korea were to go forward, that more stringent sanctions have to be put in place. the trouble with that is the united states isn't doing a lot of business with north korea to begin with. china is its major patron. china has no interest, experts agree, and the president said this himself yesterday in a destabilized north korea. north korea by most accounts has a functioning nuclear weapon. and yet they don't want to see it destabilize within itself to the point that there is so much unrest that it will implode. so this situation as tense as it has been in perhaps a decade, john. >> mike, thank you. >> north korea's nuclear program is under constant international scrutiny. north korea's believed to have between four and eight nuclear weapons. the country has carried out at least three nuclear tests since 2006. but it has yet to successfully test a long-range missile. a celebration started at the vatican for john paul ii and john xxiii. this is the scene in st. peter's square. event began with a mass led by pope francis and his predecessor, benedict xvi. 2 million are expected, including dozens of world leaders. it's a day of prayers, hymns and celebrations. a canonisation mass was held in the past two hours. pope francis started to recite the special prayer, at about this time. it's, as i said, a day of four popes, including pope john paul. there's a doingent from poland. a day of unity from the vatican watchers, a conservative and reformist coming together, an event unprecedented in the 2,000 year history of the church. giant screens, which you may not be able to see as we watch the pope and listen to the pope in the mass. they have been set up as pope francis conducts the ceremonies. he asked his predecessor, pope emmer it us benedict the xvi to take part. jonah has been watching event for the past two hours. an event unprecedented in catholic history. tell us what has been happening so far? >> i thought i better point out to you because
