and in one camp was john brown. john brown was born in new england. but his family moved to ohio when he was a young boy. and he grew up in the southern part of ohio, near kentucky, slaves and kentucky. where he had contact with slaves on a regular basis. people who own slaves and kentucky would bring them across the border and people would come from a high would go into kentucky. so john brown was sort of used to this as a kid, except he didn't understand what it quite meant until one day, he recalled this in his later life. he was about nine years old and he remembered he was playing one day with a boy. who happen to be a black boy. and john brown didn't realize or didn't sink in that this boy was a slave until after they had been playing together, essentially as equals, that then this white man came along and started yelling at the boy and beating him over the head. just abusing him. and it dawned on john brown, wait we'll wait a minute, this black boy is in a very different position than i am because nobody could ever do that to me and get away wi

no, john brown never fell into that category now john brown. did fall into call at the trance of the person who realizes he's going to be a martyr. and this is something that i'm really intrigued when i try to get inside john's ground's head and i can read his letters from jail in west in virginia and you can read his statements and comments of people who talk to him at the time. there comes a point when john brown entered harper's ferry. he was fully convinced that he was more valuable to the freedom movement alive than dead. but between the time that he is captured and the time he is executed. he realized that he's of greater value to the movement dead than alive. and so he makes very clear. that he will not countenance nor cooperate with any effort to free him from jail and some of the people who had rode with him in kansas. we're thinking seriously of going to harpers ferry charlestown was where he was jail and springing and you know, they thought well how hard can this be? it's just a country jail. in fact, it would have been pretty hard b

john in fanny?>> it was an accident, and so one of the then is that people who suffered with opioid addiction in that era, where they tried to do was keep it a secret. they did not want the outside world to know that they were addicted. so for a lot of people that meant quite literally not writing about addiction in their letters. so it's like extremely difficult to find cases of opiate addiction both among civil war veterans, and non-veterans and in the late 19th century. because there were all kinds of ramifications. and if word got out your name like you put in the paper and you might be described as being an opiate eater, and that had moral connotations with it. and less than manly and things like that. so, this family had the distinction of being only cases that i've ever found in civil war letters. civil war letters and diaries, it's funny because these are sort of the major traditional sources that scholars have so often turn to when we want to understand something, things about the lives of

>> john: matt, this is john. there has been big developments in the last 24 hours, too, in the regard to the trial that the judge reinstated charge of the third-degree murder against derek chauvin. can you explain what the difference is and what the standard of the guilt would be in order to get a conviction on a third-degree murder charge? >> it was quite remarkable. we have a major trial. the world is watching it. we made it to day four yesterday with a lingering third degree murder charge that is hovering over the case. the judge in the case peter cahill ruled that the third-degree murder charge did not apply to derek chauvin's case and this is boiling down to the word "others." i talk to legal minds up here. in third-degree murder charge in comparison to the second-degree murder charge, the third-degree murder charge reads that a person caused harm or ultimately killed others. so they consider it examples if you drove your car to a crud or if you fired in a crowd, you potentially could harm others. the judge
