gwen: a victory for patty murray, for paul ryan or john boehner himself? >> i don't think it was a victory necessarily for boehner. any bipartisan teal -- deal has eluded him for years. ryan got a deal but it's a double-edged sword for ryan. inside the house, his stock went up. in iowa, maybe not so much. so it depend on what his ambitions are. gwen: molly, what do you think? >> i think boehner is quite strengthened by this deal. that clip e-- you showed where boehner really went off on these outside groups who a lot of republicans, even conservatives in the house feel like they've been playing them like pawns in a game. that that he has groups command them to vote in a certain way and throw up their hands when it doesn't work out and the government shuts down. this was boehner wresting back control saying you are not going to be the boss of me or of us. we're the lawmakers here. we are running the house of representatives and it happened. he got almost 3/4 of the house republican caw culls. now, the tea party may have the last latch if they can make good o

watching any minute now where house speaker john boehner will hold his weekly press briefing with reporters. the budget is certainly expected to come up, be ance paul ryan and patty murray unveiled it. well, john boehner yesterday blasted conservative groups who lashed out at this budget deal before even seeing those details. today 33 house republicans sent john boehner a letter with their concerns about the bill. we're going to keep an eye on when these remarks begin, and we will take you there, jump out of whatever we're doing to make it on time. >>> well, this weekend marks one year since the shooting at sandy hook elementary school and the deaths of 20 children, 6 staff members, sparked nationwide grief and calls for change. yet one year later, no reforms have been passed. i sat down with two relatives of victims about their efforts, and here's just a small part of that interview. i'll start with you. on the investment that you've made over the last year in seeking positive reform in our country, how has it changed your attitudes toward our political system? >> for me personally, it's created my outlook, just like so many other people,

ryan gets out there and tries to talk in a way that some of the people who might be bothered with what boehner said will start to feel better. >> i think that john boehner had a message that is fundamentally directed to the profit crowd of the republican party. people who sit atop the profit wing of the republican party. those who were available the last decade when it comes to keeping careful watch on the nation's pursestrings and a republican congress. paul ryan, of course, does have future national ambitions. i think john boehner is trying to run the house and he has had great difficulty doing that. >> this budget deal in the senate, it feels odd to me at this point that it doesn't have more public republican support. >> this is peculiar. paul ryan, it's almost easy to forget. the keeper of fiscal conservatism. i think what you are seeing is this budget deal already is both sides giving up on the fundamental requirement of compromise. the fundamental insight of the deal. is it the democrats didn't do anything on entitlements? and so now this side actually gave up anything that hurt. there is an argument out there. they don't enjoy or want or

it's a rare show of bipartisanship and a huge moment for house speaker, john boehner in taking on the party. a lot of outside conservative tea party groups oppose the plan. they say it didn't go far enough. boehner was able to get the republicans on board and get it through the house. >> you mentioned him challenging the more conservative members of the party. he's been reluctant to do that in the past. do you think he's going to take them on on issues like immigration? >> i think the last government shutdown was a wake-up call. a lot of americans that blamed the tea party and the republicans for the shutdown. the potential for another one in january was something they did not want to do heading into 2014. representative paul ryan and senator patty murray, they were able to come up with a plan to prevent that for two years. i think that is -- provides a lot of economic certainty heading into the new year. >> it's friday, so i want to have a little fun if that's okay with you. >> of course. >> president obama and vice president biden exchange birthday gifts, but not christmas gifts. wh

that's a sea change of people elected. >> i think john boehner who i know and like would retract those comments. i hope he would. i'll put in a different perspective. they are right where they were a few months back. democrats wanting more revenue, republicans wanting some cuts in entitlements. now, i'm not that bright and neither is my 3-year-old dog. it suggests to me the only way we're going to get a deal is if some people are willing to give. there is common ground. the president is willing to recalculate benefits under social security, formula for those calculations early in the year. paul ryan agrees with that. the president also said he's willing to look at medicare premiums for those that earn more. ryan says he agrees to that. i don't understand why adults can't come into the room -- this is not placing -- i think republicans are at blame but at some level this impasses, we have a subsenate, we all have to give a little bit here. if not the sequestration cuts will take effect in january. as much as some people don't like them, the sky didn't fall in when they happened at the b
