john o'connell currently has six different official or unofficial names referenced in different places such as john o'connell alternative high school of technology, john o'connell alternative high, john o'connell alternates high school, john a. o'connell high school. a is his middle name, but people believe it stands for alternative. a going idea. we really appreciate maintaining the name of john o'connell. it has been a tremendous school over the years. we very much appreciate the presentation by the students, the parents, the teachers, the prince of paul, and the alumni. thank you very much. we look forward to the new name going forward. president mendoza: comments by the board? commissioner wynns: i want to thank everybody for coming tonight. i want to say, in san francisco, alternative referred to schools that did not have any attendance area. it has a legal definition on related to o'connell and unrelated to any alternative school in san francisco. the alternative school used to have it in the name -- rooftop, lakeshore, william paul. that was all that it meant. i think this is a really good idea. it clarified that we probably ought to do that. we ought to think about the principles of our names and those words that remain outdated, do not mean anything anymore, confuse people, or send a different message and what we want. i appreciate o'connell taking the lead on doing that. i want

john o'connell. i want to introduce to you the man leading the academic work in collaboration with all the wonderful teachers here at john o'connell high school. [applause] >> it is a lot more full than it was five minutes ago. as principal, i want to welcome everyone to this event. it is important, not only for o'connell students, but all of san francisco. the district is making a push to include, improve, and pushed toward education. today, we are here to celebrate another reason of how o'connell is supporting and encouraging all students to be prepared for college and for a career. while some people are spending their time looking at what students are going to college, which are going to a career, with this new tech 21 program, the courses will support students to be prepared for a career, and for college. that is the difference between the programs of before and now. the new tech 21 courses will require students to be able to apply tougher math concepts. the program will recruit students that are college-bound and students that want to go straight into the workforce. the whole purpose is to make sure that these students are prepared for the requirements that in

we opened a solar-powered facility, at john o'connell high school. we successfully passed proposition day, a $531 million bond, to upgrade the 140 million san francisco schools. -- 140 cents francisco schools. we were -- we received a great news that we had the -- we celebrated 75 and 100 year anniversaries for cleveland and marina. and we tried to support the occupy san francisco movement. we received a $3 million grant, from the core collector -- core curriculum, and another successful retreat where we tackled the most pressing issues and we addressed our own budget, committing to the continued work together for our students and families. i want to personally thank each and every one of my colleagues on the board, including our student delegates. and to susan vesester and debbie for keeping us on track, and carlos, for giving our kids what they deserve and leading the school district with confidence, commitment, nad and a great sense of humor. and a big thank-you to the hard- working staff. you each got the message, we don't have time to waste. we n

impact fees were spent on the design and construction of the brand new tech 21 building at john o'connell, which a number of u.n. to the grand opening last week. it was a very successful day. a number of dollars were spent over the summer to recreate facilities and programs to accommodate what had happened at horace mann, bryant, and when a vista -- and buena vista because of changes in school locations. we have a continuing need to do it. the state has allowed us, over the course of this year, to look at whether we are going to raise those rates, which went require us to do -- which would require us to do an additional study. we are going to look at it to see if we can raise the rates. if there are any questions, i would be happy to answer them. essentially, we are requesting the board adopt the report that there are no findings, positive or negative, strictly a report of moneys collected, money is spent, and what we have in the bank. i would be happy to answer questions. >> was this one of the special items you want to speak on, mr. kelly? i have no public speakers. comments from the board? vice
