allen, welcome. >> thank you john. >> i want to start with this whole question about the flight patel. can you tell us -- path. can you tell us how the pilot puts a flight path into the computer and how the plane responds? >> well, john it's called a flight management system it basically controls the auto-pilot. the plane flew over a series of way points. and the assumption is someone put that way points during the time the plane was airborne. i was talking to a 767 pilot, he said, that is a standard route to the middle east and i don't know if that plane flew that route inbound or outbound on previous flights. it may not have been put into the computer as it purred along. there are other possible explanations here. >> let me follow that up a bit. so there is a flight. let's see they had a flight path to beijing, if that's case, could they change it and how difficult would it be to change it to something they hadn't flown before? >> very easily. they do it through system. they literally just type in the way points. most of these airlines have software packages that allow them for exam

john. >> very unusual case, and of course the boeing 737 is considered one of the safest planes there is. allen is in washington and what does boeing say in response to this mystery? >> john, they're saying what the rest of the world is saying right now, waiting, watching, and their thoughts and prayers are with the passengers on the flight. and their relatives. boeing has joined the u.s. national transportation safety team as a technical adviser. team is organizationed in the region to offer assistance, and that means that they will be there to answer any questions about this aircraft, the 777200. or about the plane, flight 370. anything about its range, anything about its capabilities as it was configured and loaded down with those passengers and with that fuel load. anything about its communications capabilities and the redundancies built in. anything about the black boxes. thinking that the investigators need it know about that model plane and that specific plane as the investigation continues >> so the 777 has a pretty impressive safety record, right? >> uh-huh. very impressive. this is a

john. >> one of those officials says that the only thing he really likes about america are, what, jackson pollock, allen ginsburg and tupac shakur and no sanctions will keep him from appreciating these things, flat out mocking the united states, i thought, fred. >> reporter: yeah, that's exactly what it was, and it shows the very bold position that many of these russian politicians and really russian officials have shown in this as well. all the indications that we're getting, john, is that russia is not afraid of a confrontation with the west, certainly not afraid of a confrontation with the united states on this issue. in fact, one of the things that we're hearing is that the parliament here in moscow today is going to be debating possible counter sanctions, and we would expect there possibly to be u.s. senators on that list as well, if those counter sanctions come through. these are initial discussions at this point. however, they said they are going to play hard ball, and everything that they're doing right now indicates they are going to take in crimea, despite the international reactions that are

. >> reporter: allen, the building blocks for a potential diplomatic solution emerged today in paris. that is where secretary of state john kerry sat down face to face with his russian counterpart. they are talking right on the same table now and that's a good sign. kerry renewed the call for russian to send its troops back to their barracks and allow international observers into crimea. he also pressed the russian foreign minister to enter into direct talks with ukraine. that didn't happen. nor was it expected to. but kerry says the talks are showing promise. >> we agreed to continue intense discussions in the coming days with russia, with ukrainians, in order to see how we can help normalize the situation, stabilize it and overcome the crisis. >> meanwhile pressure is mounting on the financial front. european union leaders plan to meet tomorrow in brussels to discuss possible economic sanctions against russia. the u.s. house is expected to follow that with its own nonbinding vote of support and that's really where it's at right now. and they are talking about quite a bit of money. the european union is offering $15 bill

allen schauffler, in seattle, thank you very much. i want to go to kevin corriveau with another map and talk about the weather in that area, kevin. >> that's right john. whenever an airplane crashes we look first thing at the weather. i took a look at what's happening right now. most of the map is fairly quiet. when the plane is in altitude anywhere from 32,000 to 42,000 feet, it tends to be above any of the problems. there were no thunderstorms in this region, south coast of china we think this is the area of concern. now normally planes do not have problems when they're in air, they take off as well as landing. so turbulence was that a problem? we really need to have those thunderstorms. as you can see these were clear skies. as we go through the rest of the day, today and tomorrow, recovery as well as search efforts will not be hindered by any type of weather at all. so that's one good thing for the rest of this -- >> so it's clear, was it clear as a bell? >> yes, up towards china we had some weather and down near kuala lumpur we had some weather but nothing in the south china sea. >> up next barbara bush the former first daughter, shines a light
