joining me now from rome is cnn's senior vatican analyst john allen. r of the independent website cover catholicism. good to see you, john. >> hi there, lynda. happy palm sunday to you. >> yeah, happy palm sunday to you. so this is the first time pope francis will hold a mass in st. peter's square since the start of the pandemic. it's hard to believe it's been three years since the last one. what sort of measures are being taken to ensure it's safe? >> well, lynda, as you probably know, all the people around the pope, much like your last package, the people around the president, they're all tested for covid. they've all been vaccinated. beyond that, however, there's relatively little in terms of screening of the kinds of people who are going to be in the st. peter's basilica. i think the they'ry is that the people who were admitted to the basilica who will be in proximity to the pope are responsible enough to make sure they're not exposing the pope to harm, lynda. >> and of course, the pope has met with ukrainian refugee children in recent days. you how

joining me now from rome is cnn's john allen. on what the pope has been saying in what must be a bittersweet easter celebration. >> reporter: hi, kim. happy easter to you. yes, clearly the war in ukraine has cast a shadow over this easter celebration. the pope is currently wrapping up easter sunday mass in front of a crowd it's estimated around 50,000 people in st. peters square. by the way, this is the first time the pope has been able to do this in the square with a large crowd since the covid pandemic began. in that crowd are a number of ukrainian dignitaries including the mayor of one ukrainian town who was briefly arrested by russian forces who had entered his town and then later released. in about a half hour or so when the mass is over we expect the pope to deliver his traditional address to the city and world where he'll explicitly engage the crisis in ukraine and reiterate his frequent denouncing of the war. and we should know without saying anything the pope has already made in a statement in recent days about the war.

joining me from rome is cnn analyst john allen. rsweet easter celebration in many ways. what is the latest there? >> hi, kim. happy easter to you. well, as you indicated pope francis is currently celebrating the easter sunday mass in front of a large crowd gathered in st. peter's square. this is the first time the pope has been able to do that since the covid pandemic began. the last time he celebrated easter in the square in front of the crowd was 2019. and there is something of a shadow hanging over what is ordinarily a very joyous celebration for christians around the world. and that, of course, is because of the ukraine war. later today, at noon, local, the pope will deliver his traditional message to the city and the world which is usually a sort of 360 degree review of the global situation and there is every expectation that he will explicitly address the crisis in ukraine there. en doundoubtedly repeat his denunciations of the war and compassion for those suffering as a result of it. we should note, kim, even without saying a
