we want to thank you, our elected civil servants, suffers ross mirkarimi, supervisor john avalos andnt, for your dedicated service and commitment on sunday, this past sunday, on mother's day, standing with us on the steps of city hall honoring mothers who have lost children to senseless gun violence. we thank you, our supporters, from the san francisco police department, who also provided services and took time out of their busy schedules, inspector valerie matthews, captain john sanford and lieutenant julian hill of officers for justice who provided the beautiful roses for each and every mother that was present on the steps of city hall this past sunday. i stand before you because of a very concerned about the recent cut to the victims' services fund which is now at $5,000. i just left a funeral of this young man who was killed in oakland, as you know, the healing circle is not just for san francisco, we collaborate with all persons who have lost loved ones to homicide. his mother could barely bury him because of the victim services fund being cut statewide. this is my nephew, timot

the john avalos local hiring measure was important in making sure we get residents, but even in my district, there are pockets of poverty and many people out of work. supporting those unemployed and underemployed people, supporting struggling small businesses in a difficult economy, and i support the small businesses versus more chain stores that seem to be coming into the store fronts, but i try to be sympathetic to local businesses because they make up the diversity of our local neighborhoods. those are some of the challenges that face our businesses. >> are there other issues specific to your district? how do you balance the needs of the issues in your district against the needs of the city as a whole? >> i know that our district has a higher proportion of seniors than some other district, and there is a brand new senior complex and wraparound community services complex called the institution on aging bridge housing complex, but it is going to concentrate a lot of the senior services and nonprofits. about 180 units of affordable senior housing in our district. i am actually a baby boomer

i want to thank the mayor for coming to district 11 and supervisor john avalos and his staff for coordinating this event. a few of our organizations came together to talk about community development, needs and strategies in district 11. we are excited to share with you what you came up with. in the face of a struggling economy, as you can see in our own backyard, home foreclosures and business closures next door. we wanted to the knowledge first that despite these challenges, we continued to rebuild ourselves, families, organizations. as a vibrant community, working families with deep roots in district 11, an immense pride in the excelsior and entire community. there is a need to protect the critical services. we also want to make sure city officials recognize the importance of not only continuing but expanding city investing in our neighborhoods so that we can continue to build and strengthen the neighborhood based strategies and implementation of community plans to build a sense of community. we want to talk about two aspects of community development, and i want to bring up stephanie. she w
