. >> author john avlon talked about lincoln as a peacemaker in the plans he had for a post civil war what he had to say. >> one of the questions i often get is, you know, 16,000 lincoln books, as you well know, why you? why now? why this? i found a quote from general lucia's clay, who was the general who led the occupation of germany after the second world war. he was actually the son of a georgia senator born three decades after the civil war. the reporter asked him, what guided your decisions at that notably a successful occupation, the rarest of things? and he said, i try to think that abraham lincoln would've done for the staff if he had lived. in that quote was the sort of seed that this book came from. it stems from a fascination about how they come about winning a after winning a war, something we've struggled with this century, not alone. also, the question of how we defend democracy and what kind of leadership it takes to reunite a divided nation. that's very much an extension of my previous books, especially the washington book. the question of how we strengthen democracies

let's discuss this with john avlon, mark sanford and maria cardona. want to talk with you about, what is this? why is this happening? what is the point that abbott is trying to make? >> he's trying to make, again, another cardinal rule of politics is that all politics are local. tip o'neill had that saying. it's true, 4000 immigrants a day are coming across the border of texas. and to give new york a little taste of what they have experience and in texas, it's 100 votes, again, we are talking 100, versus 4000 a day. i don't think it's a big deal. i think it's great politics. i think for texas standpoint, it will play very, very well for a bit. i think it could make it a touch more real for folks saying, we are a sanctuary city, but maybe we are not so sanctuary because you don't -- texas. >> i think what you are hearing from adams is that we are overwhelmed. what are your thoughts on this? >> i think what abbott is doing is cruel. mayor adams is right about that. it is inhumane. it is using migrants to be a political football to play these political g

joining us now to discuss all of this is cnn anchor and senior political analyst john avlon. is, thank you so much for joining us this morning. i want to go to you first, we learned about this not from the doj, not from the fbi, but from president trump himself. he was not necessarily confirming this. he was blasting it out there. he appears to see this as beneficial. how does he think this is going to help him? >> it appears as though he could turn out to be a martyr and the situation. you know me, i am usually an apologist for trump but i am a republican. what i'm hearing from social conservatives is their outrage at the lack of transparency. we understand the doj has information they need to berthold. but, it is really hard to look at what happened yesterday as anything short of an overreach by the federal authorities, and potential political persecution. many are saying, i have talked to a lot of folks up and down the political spectrum. doing this to such magnitude, such a search to this extreme. anything short of finding the nuclear codes at mar-a-lago is going to hugely

let's bring in cnn's chief national affairs analyst, casey hunt, senior political analyst, john avlond senior political analyst, nia henderson. good to see you all. john, kind of. so, casey, there is a major election tonight that voters are playing attention to, the threats to our democracy. you saw the polling, saying it was number one, and they're thinking about their pocketbooks, thinking about inflation, thinking about food on the table. what does this mean as we inch closer? >> i think it's a lot about the environment we are living in. you talk with david, and what that means, and we have been reading this is an extreme good year for republicans, just because of factors like, joe biden being in the white house and, in the first midterm election for the president, bad for his party, obviously, inflation, but i took away from that poll is both, yes, okay, democracy is an issue, i didn't expect that, but, there is also something, anything, more important than inflation. i think, potentially, that says a lot. it's one poll, so we need to see a couple of others. >> i'm going to pull t

john avlon with our reality check. >> political violence, it is a phrase that should chill the heartson of political violence. since the fbi searched ex-president trump's state to remove top secret documents, the chatter online is increasing, calls for violence against law enforcement are real and imminent. yesterday we saw the arrest of a pennsylvania man for threatening to slaughter fbi agents, according to court documents. he hasn't entered a plea yet. that followed an assault on an fbi office in cincinnati on thursday, that left the shooter dead. social media posts attributed to the men presented a similar twisted mindset, pumped up by hyperpartisan propaganda, a new variation on an old virus, known as aggressive defensiveness. it is a toxic mix of victimhood and violence, aformula used to radicalize people for centuries. i first heard the term aggressive defensiveness in a book called "field of blood" which details america's slide toward civil war in the 1800s. she unearthed the fact there were over 70 acts of violence between congressmen under the cap capitol dome. she writes,

john avlon and bernarda.hey try to are protect in the filing what you try to protect in any investigation. it's not unusual to see? >> absolutely. it's not anything different, except you have the magnitude of the press and the former president. there's a lot here but most importantly with an ongoing investigation you don't want to compromise the investigation. you lose the element of surprise once you know what they are. you can deal with obstruction of evidence, you can deal with witness tampering. you can deal with so many valuables that will completely impede the investigation that it's not worth the risk. >> hair, highly classified information, and then highly sensitive information about witnesses, plural, john, that could compromise this investigation and others. again, i was just surprised to see this much information in one court filing, lee, yesterday, what do you make that there are witnesses for other investigations as well? >> it's clearly the tip. things that make president trump crazy. the questi

john avlon with our reality check. >> so there's a feedback loop between the far left and the far right see both parties similarly extreme. but to a large extent, this is a fight in a hall of mirrors, all partisan distortion driven by emotion. the fact is that the far left and the far right do not have remotely the same political strength in their parties and this year's primary provide the receipts. this cycle, we've seen plenty of evidence from election lies and the gop's litmus test. 39 election deniers won their house primaries, and that's just in six key swing states. by comparison, the far left is falling far short. the so-called squad plays a powerful role in republican politics but there are just seven house democrats who officially support defunding the police but 147 republicans voted to overturn the election after the attack on our capitol. extremes are usually louder than they are large. and get this, just 12% of democrats and dem-leaning independents describe themselves as members of the progressive left, according to a 2021 survey by pew, which translates to 7% of voters.
