after talking with senator john barrasso of wyoming, who has a new job. let me ask you both about this year, the last half of this year. it has been about gearing up for the 2012 elections. are there clear winners and losers about who gets to go home and say what to their constituents after we have seen this over the last few months? >> the incumbents are be used -- are the losers because the congressional approval ratings are so low. there is so much angst out there that we do not know which party is going to take the brunt of it. the debt battle and another government shut down show b down just recently. there will be a lot of jockeying. there will not be a lot of big deals in 2012. they will just do what they have to do like spending bills and other must have stuff. >> a lot of this year was a reaction to the last two years. you will see that continued. just absolute discipline and focus on the republican argument that it is spending and not taxes. they will win that in the bargain that goes through this weekend. democrats look like they are abandoning

senator john barrasso, senate foreign relations committee and a surgeon.ll. bill: $200 billion in new spending is that what we're talking about next two weeks? >> it is hard to believe and the president doesn't seem to mind if it adds it to the deficit and the debt. the president tomorrow is going to kansas to try to channel teddy roosevelt and give a speech on fairness he says. well, i don't see it at all being fair to put this kind of a debt on our children and our grandchildren and bury them under a mountain of debt. i'm not voting for something if it adds to the debt and deficit. i want things to be paid for. bill: understood. this is what is on the line as we understand it. $120 billion to renew a social security payroll tax cut. $50 billion of unhe will employment benefits to people out of work more than a half a year. doctors will get rescued from steep cuts in medicare. you say you will not support this, is that right? >> well, i want to make sure that it is paid for. it is hard to believe we could have spend two years debating a health care law an

senate leader mitch mcconnell seemed thrilled with the deal, even high-fiving fellow republican john barrasso. but house republicans said no way. >> a two-month extension is nothing more than kicking the can down the road. >> reporter: tonight, john mccain is warning his republican colleagues in the house that they are, quote, harming the republican party, by refusing to pass the bipartisan senate bill. senate democrats, meanwhile, tell me, there will be no more negotiating. the house either passes the senate bill or takes the blame for a tax increase hitting 160 million americans. george? >> and jon, the white house today was telling me that they expect house republicans to cave. any signs of that? >> reporter: no signs of it yet, george. they are saying that they are standing firm. they believe they are right on the substance that the extension should be for a full year, but we'll see how it plays out. >> we will see. could be well past christmas. jon karl, thank you. >>> and one more political note. our new abc news poll shows the republican race for the white house is now a dead heat. new

here is senate minority leader mitch mcconnell high-fiving wyoming senator john barrasso on friday night. let's go have a cool one. we got her done, didn't we? they're going to pass this one in the house. really? john boehner knew exactly what was in this bill and he was readily to send the whole house of representatives home. then this group called the t-t-t-tea party, are they still around? they don't even have a candidate. but they know how to get the dog by the tail. boehner had a conference call. we got to get together on saturday morning and figure this thing out. he had a conference call in his caucus on saturday and reportedly said, hey, look, this is a good deal. the senate package is good. we got to take it. tea party members blasted boehner. for going along with the deal and demanded a new vote. they want a new vote. we're not going to take this. the tea party was not happy with the two-month extension and they demanded an entire year. well, boehner, he went running with his tail between his legs over to "meet the press" to change his tune. today boehner claimed the two-month
