outside the emergency operations center here on lake charles because the governor of louisiana john bel edwardsust arrived here. he is going to come out and talk to us but first, is upstairs with the parish which has been inundated with rain for the past week or so. it's continuing to get more rain. right now we are in a break but we've seen some heavy squall today and i want to show you across the street where they are staging some of these boats. i don't know they are officially members of the cajun navy but a lot of private citizens towing boats over here and being dispatched to areas in need. before we get to the rescue that took place overnight, i want to show you video from a shelter that which our earlier today, the purple heart correct center in lake charles which is now surrounded by water. they move more than 100 people into that shelter overnight and there was some talk checking hour by hour about whether they need to fly back find another place to put those guys because a shelter is surrounded by high water. they are expecting heavy rains to hit this area. this afternoon, this eveni

by the way, is doing a fantastic job, and his entire staff likewise, as well as with governor john bel edwardsery much involved in starting the process of louisiana. we have pledged our full support as texas and louisiana battle and recover from this devastating and historic storm. there has probably never been anything like this. under the supervision of fema, long,strative rocker brock there has been a tremendous amount of work done. he has been so outstanding in so many ways. more than 8500 federal workers are involved in the texas effort alone. i have also today declared emergencies in louisiana at the request of governor edwards. recovery will be a long and difficult road, and the federal government stands ready, willing, and able to support that effort. right now, the single most important thing is the safety and security of those still in harm's way, including the first responders, who have been so terrific and brave.protecting the lives of our people is my highest priority. every asset at my command is at the disposal of local officials. tragic times such as these bring out the best in

joining us right now democratic governor of louisiana john bel edwards.y being hit by this hurricane. what parts of your state have you most concern? >> well, good morning, brian. we remain most concerned about southwest louisiana. cammeron parish where harvey did make landfall a few hours ago, that -- we have curfew there until 9:00 this morning. we know we have 500 power outages and numerous roads are overtopped with water. this morning thus far i can tell you the worst case scenario has not happened. we are very grateful for that but we do need this storm to get moving. get it over land and lead it dissipate in strength and stop drawing all that moisture out of gulf. the other thing that's going to happen is once that storm surge stops. the rivers will be able to drain as they normally do. the water that's elevated right now will actually go down and we will all be much better off. but thus far, things are not going as bad as we had feared and we are hopeful that we are going to be able to get through the next 24 hours or so without tremendous amount o
