he called the death of fellow comedian john belushi a wake-up call. then after years of sobriety he checked himself into a rehab in 2006 and again at the hazleton clinic in minnesota where he was expected to remain for several weeks. his wife issued this statement yesterday susan snyder who he married in 2011. she said, quote, i lost my husband and my best friend while the world lost one of the most beloved artists and beautiful human beings. i am utterly heartbroken. marin counsel she sheriff's office scheduled a news conference at 11:00 a.m. pacific time. he had been battling severe depression recently according to his publicist. he first moved to the bay area when he was a teenager he has two homes there one in tiberon another is n the city. william lajeunesse, thank you. >> while he spent his life making other people laugh, behind the scenes he was very unhappy battling depression and alcoholism and drug addiction for years. in the 80's williams spoke publically about how the death of his friend john belushi helped him stop using cocaine. in 2006

in the chris farley vein, the john belushi vein. that was the story robin himself most publicly embraced. he talked about those addictions. he talked about those struggles. it's very clear that something else was going on here. that he was struggling profoundly with depression as his own publicist said. you're absolutely right. it's not something that he made abundantly clear that he talked about to people. it's not something that goes without a stigma to this day. and it will be tremendous if that can change. if celebrities become as comfortable with saying, i have to go to rehab, which they've become comfortable with. i mean, that stigma has largely been removed. people will own the fact that they are struggling with drugs and alcohol. so if there's any hope, it's that maybe the way that once people were ashamed or embarrassed to say they had to get help with their addictions to alcohol or drugs may now say, i have to get help with my mental illness. this is something that i need to get help with. >> and there is no shame in going

reporter: it wasn't just alcohol, abusing cocaine in the early '80s but quitting after his friend john belushi's>> he was a one of the toughest people you can meet and it cleaned up a generation of people because he was as strong as anyone you could meet. >> when we hear about people using drug, most of the time they use it for getting high. >> for me it was basically a way to escape and cut off from people. >> reporter: he told abc news in 2011 the role of a lifetime that helped keep him sober for 20 years was that of father. >> the one thing that cleaned me up was having a kid. that's immediate. if that's the same -- i didn't have any rehab or any, you know, any groups. >> reporter: but after those two decades of sobriety williams says he sampled some whiskey in 2006 and within a week he was hooked. his family reportedly staged an intervention. he spoke about the grip of addiction with diane sawyer just two months after leaving rehab. >> away, quiet time, good though and back. people say how do you feel. with my fingers. >> just alcohol? >> just alcohol. that's enough really. >> to talk about

battle or anybody fighting these demons, whether it's a phillip seymour hoffman, whether it's a john belushi. everyone is fighting their battle themselves alone in their minds. and everyone seems to have trouble admitting they've got a problem and reaching out for help. robin had done that in the past and had done it apparently recently. what drove him at this particular time, i don't know if we'll ever find out. maybe his family, immediate family knows a bit. maybe a therapist. but certainly i don't know that we ever will. but it was such a far cry from the loving, happy, hopping around, crazy guy that i worked with back then and knew and the joy he brought everybody. it's very -- it's just terrible to hear this, the coroner's report. >> yeah, indeed. i want to bring liz winstead back in. the shock they feel in something like this happening, you think of a comedian as someone bringing joy to so many other people and many people presume that comes from an inner joy. that's not always the case. >> no, i don't think it is always the case. i don't think it's a blanket statement to say, oh, you
