my colleague john berman is live in hoboken. tell me exactly what the police think any connection might and be why he would have been handcuffed, john. >> reporter: oh, you know ashleigh, at this point we simply don't know. as you say this has been the site of an enormous amount of activity, an enormous amount of questions, now an enormous amount of confusion, really. you talked about that picture we saw earlier of ryan lanza being led from this apartment in handcuffs. he was taking in for questioning. also cnn has learned, taken in for questioning two roommates apparently of ryan lanza, brought in for questioning, not believed to be connected in any way to the suspect adam lanza. the hoboken police were here, jersey city police were here, there was a bomb squad here, fbi were here, the fbi actually removed some materials from this apartment, including perhaps a computer. but at this point, it is now clear that the shooter was not ryan lanza, it was his brother adam lanza. ryan we believe is still in custody. i can tell you, this

i'm john berman. >> i'm zoraida sambolin.ame for the september 11th terrorist attack at the u.s. consulate in benghazi. a blistering report that includes systemic failures that led to the attack that killed chris stevens and three other americans, the panel also finding security in benghazi was grossly inadequate and that repeated requests to beef up personnel at the consulate were ignored by leaders in washington as well and there was a lack of transparency, responsiveness and leadership at the senior levels. this in the aftermath of the tragedy. foreign affairs reporter elise lab b labott live from washington. what did we learn from the report be didn't already know? a lot of this we were talking about as they were investigating. >> that's right. the main thing i took from the report, the state department really missed the warning signs of what was right in front of them, deter yoreating security situation, what was going on in benghazi. five attacks leading up to the 9/11 attack, including one on the u.s. consulate itself.

but first, john berman is in new york with some of the other stories of the day. a big story coming out of the white house right now. the president met again today with house speaker john boehner after boehner made two apparent concessions toward averting the so-called fiscal cliff. the meeting this time was about 45 minutes long. over the weekend, the speaker proposed raising tax rates on those making over $1 million a year. cnn also learned that he's proposing a one-year extension of the government's borrowing limit and that could avert yet odd ugly debt ceiling debate. a congressional source tells us in exchange, speaker boehner is pushing for a trillion dollars in spending cuts including to medicare, which the white house has opposed. as for now, the president is holding fast to his desire to raise tax rates on incomes beginning at $250,000. >>> overseas, a veteran syrian statesman rumored last summer to have defected, today is proposing a peaceful end to his country's civil war. he's saying government forces can't win and neither can the rebels. we'll have the

john berman with a look at stories making news today. good morning. >> weather to worry about right now. holiday travelers, be ware. a massive winter storm from colorado to upper great lakes, expected to cause dangerous blizzard or near-blizzard conditions. cold and stormy in the northwest. alexandra steele at the weather center, give us the lowdown. >> john we have severe weather and also all of the snow. and here is a look. we'll watch this winter storm kind of dole out snow as it rolls out. it will move today. this morning, we'll see snow start in denver, colorado. winding down, 1 to 3 inches, but then denver, colorado, omaha, kansas and then as we head from tonight into tomorrow, we'll move it in through iowa and into nebraska, and then to the upper midwest. 6 to 12 inches in omaha, in des moines, 6 to 12 inches of snow. 50-mile-per-hour wind gusts, blizzard warnings there. the models pretty consistent. guidance, we head through tonight, watching the snow push eastward. compact, narrow line of snow with an incredible amount of wind.
