. >> i'm john berman.at to see you this morning, a lot going on with new developments in the hunt for really what is a needle in a haystack in one of the most remote places on the planet. this is the latest in the search for those two pieces of debris that could maybe be from malaysia flight 370. five jets, four from australia, one from the united states, scouring the search zone overnight in the south indian ocean, overnight our time. it is daytime there. we are told the visibility in that area, as it is daylight there, is said to be ideal, but it will not last. conditions will worsen in a hurry. at this point, there's no trace of those two floating objects that were picked up by satellite imagery several days ago. that's at this point. australian maritime boss john young is giving an update on the search. let's listen. >> although the search area is much smaller than we started with, it nonetheless is a big area when you're looking out the window and trying to see something by eye. so, we may have to do

i'm john berman. >> i'm christine romans.. >>> let's start with this news this morning, a tragic car crash at the south by southwest festival in austin, and police say it took less than one minute to inflict horrifying destruction. at least two people now dead, two dozen others hurt. a driver plowed into a crowd at south by southwest, gathered outside a music venue. at least five of those hurt are said to be in critical condition at this hour. this happened on a busy street packed with people just after midnight. police say they tried to stop the driver for an apparent dwi, when he sped off the wrong way down a one-way street and crashed. they say he then tried to run off, but they caught him. the driver now in custody. his name is not being released. >>> also this morning, the death toll rising after the devastating building explosion here in new york city. the blast in east harlem leaving at least six people dead, more than 60 hurt and several others still unaccounted for. a gas leak is being blamed for destroying an apartm

john berman is here.is a possible new lead in this search that really intensified today as crews did get a break from weather, but all the planes have now returned and only found three objects by sight that did not really appear to be connected to the plane. our kate bolduan is in perth, australia, with the very latest. kate? >> reporter: good morning once again, guys. there's a renewed sense of cautious optimism that we could be closer to finding malaysia flight 370. there are satellite images showing 122 objects, possible debris in the same area of the ipd an ocean where the search has been focused since late last week. on this 19th day of searching, a dozen planes and five ships had a narrow window of time to search for the missing jet. they came away with three pieces of debris being spotted. as investigators analyze a partial ping from the plane that came nearly seven hours after it dropped off radar. this morning malaysian authorities say they've received new satellite images possibly showing debris

. >> i'm poppy harlow in for john berman today, thursday, march 27th, 4:00 a.m. on the east coast. a lot of news this morning. we begin with that desperate search for flight 370 cut short by very bad weather. 11 aircraft evacuated from the search area in the southern indian ocean just a few hours ago, after spending a few hours looking for those 122 objects photographed sunday by french satellite, but not a single sighting. ships, though, do remain in the area searching for any sign of that missing plane, all while investigators dig deeper into the background of flight 370's captain to find out if he, or who could be the one who possibly took this jetliner down. let's begin with the latest on the search off the coast of australia. andrew stevens is live for us from perth this morning. good morning, andrew. >> reporter: good morning, poppy. we're actually here inside the perth air force base, just waiting for the australian flight to return. it didn't get down there. it was turned around halfway down because of that bad weather. now, you can see behind me, here's one of the p-3 orio

i'm michaela pereira alongside john berman.welcome our viewers from right here in the united states and all around the globe. we have breaking news in the flight for flight 370. >> pilots from australia and china each report spotting objects floating in the southern indian ocean, kate bolduan is tracking it all from search headquarters in perth, australia. kate? >> good morning, all. the two sightings came just hours apart. australian pilots spotting two object, one round and one rectangular and china's pilots also saw two objects, both white and rectangular in the same general search area. authorities report it could be just about a matter of hours before we know for sure they have the debris in hand and then of course it's a question when will we know if this debris is part of that missing jetliner. a source close to the investigation tells cnn the jetliner descended to 12,000 feet after making that infamous sharp left turn. let's discuss that with andrew stevens. where we are is pearce air force base. what do you take from t

. >> i'm john berman. 11:00 a.m. in the east. developments in the mystery surrounding the jet line their vanished with 239 people on board. we're this many day six of the search. right now malaysian fiofficials are denying the flight may have kept flying four hours after it reported contact. this comes in a response to the wall street journal that says rolls royce engines a board the jet automatically sent data to the manufacture as part of the maintenance program. the report sites two unnamed sources. >> all that unfolding as v vietnamese crews have found nothing where with chinese officials say they spotted debris in the water. they now say those reports were a mistake. now there is confusion because of contradictions. rolls royce and boeing have told malaysia nothing about the transmissions. >> air traffic controllers lost contact with the plane shortly after that, they're thinking around 1:30 a.m. joining us to sort through the twists, retired american airline pilot jim tillman and richard joining us in the studio. first, jim

. >> i'm john berman. >> new information has changed the search zone for flight 370. already, it could possibly be bearing some fruit. it could turn out to be nothing of significance. until now, only satellites had seen anything. this is what a military plane from new zealand spotted today. right now, investigators are checking out photographs like these from this new search area to see if they are missing parts or parts of the missing jet. also, we should tell you a chinese patrol ship is getting in position to find those objects. that is expected to happen tomorrow. as for the forecast, the weather is expected to cooperate. remember the satellite images, australian officials say, forget about them. >>> our kyung lau was one of the few reporters able to fly on the poseidon. can you tell us what you saw, what it was like? any possible debris sightings? >> reporter: i can tell you that we were. the plane that i was on that i just stepped off was one of the planes that did spot some debris. the debris was spotted right as we were entering this new search zone. as we wer
