let's get back to john berman who is in wilmington. he's dealing with the wall of the eye. john, if you can hear me, please, tell us how you are doing? >> we are dealing with it the best we can right now, chris. it's doing a number of our communications systems here. the eye on the shore, the outer eyewall directly over wilmington, north carolina, where i am. chad meyers telling me we are getting three inches of rain per hour. it feels like that, and it feels like it's coming right in our face from every single direction. the wind is whipping it around every which way. wind gusts, chad was telling us, 90 miles per hour. behind me is the northeast cape fear river. i can't turn around and look at it because the wind is coming off so fiercely and blowing the water in your face if you turn around. it blows down past wilmington, and there's concern the storm surge could push the rivers back up into wilmington even as the tremendous rainfall, three inches of rain per hour creates a flooding situation with the rain coming down with the rivers. over 400,000 customers without power r

john berman in wilmington, north carolina. this is cnn special live coverage of hurricane florence. behind me is the northeast cape fear river. one of the rivers that flows into the atlantic from here. this is a river that is concerned about flooding. there are a number of boats here. i think you can see a jib on a sailboat that has come loose. it was tied around the mast. it has come loose and shaking violently and very loud here. i think someone was trying to tie it down. that would be a hard job. that is what could come loose and become flying debris and be dangerous as the winds pick up in a storm like this. powerful outer bands have passed through. sustained winds of 50 to 60 miles an hour and gusts more powerful than that. it is just the beginning. it will be like that for some time here in wilmington, north carolina. let's go to kaylee hartung who is not too far from where i am right now. riding out the storm with a family here in wilmington. kaylee, what do you see? >> reporter: john, we're waking up here just on the b

i appreciate it. >> let's go back to, if we see, john berman there. he has been braving the winds and the rain. john, it had been incredible to watch you reporting through all of this. i know it's hard. and i know you have said it is 92 miles an hour wind gusts. how are you feeling now? >> you know, i'm always happy to be a visual aid for your interview with brock. so that felt good. look, you know, the wind is fierce here. we're getting these 90 miles an hour wind gusts in wilmington, north carolina. but that isn't the story of the real threat. the real threat is the water. it is the storm surge. it is the rain, which 22 inches already in atlantic beach and still more to come. it's already caused some damage up the coast, severe damage i should say, up the coast from where we are right now. up in jacksonville there was a roof collapse at a hotel causing evacuations. we are there. ed, tell us what happened. >> reporter: well, we have experienced these winds for not just a short while. it's been going on here since early evening last night. so it is the

>>> all right, john berman in wilmington, north carolina. our special live coverage of hurricane florence. hurricane florence is here in wilmington. it has been raining for hours, torrential rain for hours. and the winds are now getting serious. we have gusts of hurricane force strengths easily, consistently blowing at 50 or 60 miles per hour. across north carolina 185,000 people are without power as we speak. up in new bern, which is 80 miles north of where i am, they've had a real issue with storm surge. 10 feet of flooding at times, 200 water rescues already, our understanding is some 150 people are in need of rescue, but it's hard to get to them now because of the wind speed. rescue crews are low to go out when wind speeds are 50, 60 miles an hour. that's why there's been so many evacuation orders up and down the coast here. and one more reminder though you will see that the wind speed has been reduced to a category 1 storm, that's not what's this storm is about. and that's not where the danger is. the danger here is in the duration, the

looking at you compared to where we were looking at with john berman, it is like you are either in two different spots or he was outside and you are inside because it has changed significantly because the eye has gone down. all morning long where john was the wind was blowing offshore, down the river. now it is beginning to turn around and it will blow up the river stopping that rain from coming down. there is a lot more rain. that's still 20 inches of rain to come. it's still there. this is a big storm. the pressure is still very low. it just doesn't have more than a category one wind in the eye. that's the only difference between this storm and a category three is the eye wind. everything else is exactly the same. wilmington, north carolina normal to date. you should have 42 inches. right now you are up to 63. that is so much water in the room. you have the trees coming down, the roofs that are wet. so we have 17 moderate stage floods and 14 major floods going on right now and obviously it's still raining. if it gets back in the water tonight, that could be our next step for chris cu

want to turn back to john berman who is there in north carolina. john?> i'm here on oak island in north carolina. the sun just peeked through the sky right now. this may be the last i see it for a long, long time. i want to bring in the director of the national hurricane center to get a sense of the latest storm track and where it is at this moment. ken, what are you seeing? >> john, yeah, we're getting frequent updates from the radar. we are maintaining that 110 miles an hour. this system seems to be slowing down a little bit as advertised. but one thing we keep talking about and that's really important, these hurricane winds expend 70 miles from the center. 170 miles from the center is the winds. you are seeing these rain bands already reaching the north carolina coast with some of those high winds and the heavy rains. i am couraging everybody not necessarily to concentrate on that center. with that kind of size, those impacts could be well away from the center. >> that's a super important point. but just so people understand, the eye of the storm, whe

john berman, calms are back now. if you can hear us, keep going and tell us how you are doing. >> reporter: chris, we are back here. you know, you can see it coming down here. the rain is really, really thick right now. it's messing with our signal. the wind speed probably higher than 80 miles per hour. i was talking about the cape fear river, the northeast cape fear river behind me, this is one of the waterways that will almost certainly flood. i can't turn around because the rain will fly into my face too fast, and the saland the sails come loose and they are flapping with the wind. and anything not tied down can turn into missiles and projectiles. we have been speaking to rescue crews up and down the coast. obviously, you can see the wind blowing and the rain coming down. this looks tremendous, but the real fear, the real danger is north of here in cities like new bern, new bern, north carolina, where there have been water rescues throughout the night. they went as far as they could until they had to stop because

this is john berman. right there. that's wilmington. here is topsail beach. all the way up to emerald isle and morehead city. this is going to pop power lines. john, you will see a blue flash as transformers pop. you may have power off. it may come back on. i tell you what, that 285,000 for people without power, that will go up rapidly as the eyewall comes onshore. chris, you are here with the offshore flow. as the eye works down the coast, something like that, you will eventually get to this side of the eyewall. it may take 24 hours to get there. when you do, that's when you will see the surge and your beach will flood. north myrtle to conway will see that surge up river rather than the neuse river back here. >> chad, we heard from the neuse river and new bern on the neuse. we heard from the storm surge and dramatic rescues that have taken place. as the storm moves down to wilmington and south and you get more of the rivers which line the coast, will it be a similar situation? >> yes. absolutely. new bern will get worse before it gets better. we are down on t

let's go to cnn's "new day" anchor john berman. , you're right there in northeast cape fear river in wilmington, north carolina. the eye of the storm could go right over you. >> reporter: that's right. could pass right over us sometime tomorrow, but winds have already started. the bands are already passing over wilmington. we can field the wind gusting, and you can see i'm soaked already. one of the major concerns here, it's a double concern, it's the storm surge that could come up the cape fear river, the northeast cape fear river from the coast and then the flooding, the 12 to 24 maybe higher inches of rain expected in this area over the next several days. they are expecting the cape fear river to reach 22 feet. that's 10 feet higher than it is right now. we've been speaking to the rivermaster of the cape fear river, and he tells us all kinds of stories that just send a chill town your spine. there are had a goons west of here, they could wash into the river and flow down where we are, and the animals could fall into the river and
