ambassador john bolton, former u.s. ambassador to the united nations, senior fellow at the american enterprise institute and fox news contributor joins us now. ambassador, we just heard robert gates say the president has set an unrealistic goal to destroy isis. is it? >> well, i think he said with the means that the president has made available to date, which is absolutely right. let's go back to what the president himself has said. he said we want to degrade and ultimately destroy isis. well, you know, the bolsheviks came to power in russia in 1979, and ultimately they were defeated in 1991. ultimately should not be our goal. the longer we allow isis to consolidate its power and the territory it now holds, the harder it's going to be. frankly, the forces that are arrayed against them now, the kurds, the free syrian army such as it is the regime in baghdad, are not nearly sufficient to do the job. but before we talk about which specific american units we're going to deploy, let's have a strategy to bring in to play the
