john brennan is still with us. erin is in jerusalem, looking at the background there, sorry i misspoke. john brennan, from what we have seen so far, is it too early to say how serious this attack is and how successful the israeli response has been? >> well, the iranians are well known for their rhetorical saber rattling. i think we have seen some of that. it seems this was limited. ballistic missiles that were fired at israel and that the israelis, others were able to intercept. and if there were no casualties, that's great. but the statement coming out of iran makes it appear as though at least this salvo they feel as though they have satisfied the need to respond to the israeli strikes against hezbollah. and so it may be just a repeat of what we saw in april. and israelis may feel they need to strike against iranian targets inside of iran because of these ballistic missile launches. but hopefully if there were no casualties on the ground in israel, this is not going to be the trigger that would lead to a quick es

let me bring in ben rhodes, former deputy national security adviser, and john brennan, former cia directorart with you. this feels like a pretty significant escalation. and i wonder what you make of the warnings and entreaties by the biden administration not to escalate against iran in a way that could exacerbate a regional conflict, because it doesn't seem that the israeli government really listens to the biden administration. >> yeah, they haven't in many cases in terms of escalatory action, certainly recently in lebanon. i think the question here, though, is what precise type of escalation is taking place. now, what the biden administration has been most concerned about in its warnings as raf said is an israeli attack on either the iranian nuclear facilities or iranian oil fields. both because of their strategic importance to the regime, but also because the regime itself would see that as almost an existential attack on its survival. and might therefore respond in kind and actually there have been warnings out of the iranian government that they would respond by large scale attacks on

john brennan, your thoughts on this statement from the idf?ld israel put this out there if there was much uncertainty here? what is the likelihood that sinwar was taken out? >> well, ana, i think that sinwar has been one of the israeli targets for the past year. he's been the priority target, because he's not just the architect of october 7th massacre, but also the military and political leader of hamas. if they were able to eliminate him, again, it's not confirmed, but he may have been hiding, i don't want to say in plain sight, but above ground, as a way to mask his actual location. the israelis, who were going through those tunnels, saw that the command structure was there. but it would be a significant blow to hamas. it would further decapitate the organization that has already host a number of senior leaders. it's not going to lead to the demise of the hamas militancy and terrorist organization, but it certainly will do a lot to degrade its capabilities as it will be searching for a successor to sinwar if the israelis have killed him. >>
