punchbowl news has written a lot about this and joining me now is its founder, john bresnahan. e call like that or look at the other things that happened and say it's juvenile, it's stupid, except in the context of we have seen the violence that can come out of political hate speech in 2021. so talk to me about where we are on capitol hill right now. have we ever seen anything like this? >> no. and i've covered congress for almost 30 years now, and i've never seen anything like this. it's gotten worse over the years. the 90s were a period where there was a lot of partisan chip, the clinton administration, the clinton impeachment, newt gingrich, the start of the tea party, trump, the backlash against trump. politics has gotten so personal and so bad between members. there used to be a level of camaraderie. it's not there. we have metal detectors outside the house, they're checking for weapons on members of congress going onto the house floor. we've almost had fights on the house floor. that's happened in the past, but, you know, it feels every day like all it is is, you need a sp

joining me, john bresnahan, john, thank you for being here. look, we know historical trends.t position to regain the house and senate. it doesn't mean they're going to. but the gop is set up well. will running in your estimation, people you talked to will running on the big lie hurt or help the republicans' chances? >> you know, there's a lot of ways to look at this. i mean, this is not new. january 6th the republicans voted -- 137 republicans voted not to certify the election. this is trump doing this since the day he lost the election. the thing is it suits donald trump's needs more than it suits republicans' needs. although there is something here, angry voters vote, but angry voters also attacked the capitol. they threatened election officials, they completely -- you know, they're unpredictable. they don't vote -- they didn't vote in georgia in january. there's a lot of ways this can be cut. this is more -- this suits trump's needs more than the broader republican party's needs. the republicans are already motivated to vote against joe biden. and independents have turned

also with with us, punch bowl news cofounder, john bresnahan.at should we know about who got subpoenaed and why should we believe those subpoenas are going to mean anything? these days, subpoenas serve nothing more than useful bird cage liners. >> well, steph, let's start with what these subpoenas mean and who these people are. these were six people who were extremely close to the former president and what their role is leading up to january 6th, they were actively in discussions and sometimes persuasion with local election officials to try to overturn the election results in those particular states and also trying to persuade the former vice president, mike pence, to overturn the election results on january 6th in a congressional proceeding. you have bill stepien, who's a former top trump campaign official all the way to john eastman, a conservative lawyer. whose the one who wrote that two-page, six-point memo on how mike pence can overturn the election results. you also have someone who we don't -- have never really heard about. angela mccallu

starting with that big news on capitol hill, bringing in correspondent leigh ann caldwell and john bresnahan. leigh ann, what does this do for the vote that was or is planned for tomorrow in the house? >> reporter: this timing was really shocking to house democrats and the senate as well. joe manchin hasn't been saying anything new than he has been in the last couple months, but just as these negotiations are so close to wrapping up is really causing a lot of confusion on capitol hill, especially as the house is hoping to vote on the infrastructure bill and this $1.75 trillion safety net and climate change bill as early as this week. now, as far as specifics are concerned, senator manchin said that he needs some more assurances before he's ready to move forward. listen to what he said in this press conference just moments ago. >> simply put, i will not support a bill that is this consequential without thoroughly understanding the impact that it will have on our national debt, our economy, and most importantly, all of our american people. >> reporter: in english, what it seems like he wants i
