freedom," they were not well-known and are not well-known today and undoubtedly you have heard of john brown i wager perry anderson, shield green, lewis leary and john anthony copeland, these were the five men out of 18 that john brown led to harpers ferry on october 16, 1859. i write about not just these men, forgotten hidden figures treated as footnotes by historians but also the world into which they were born and raised and their role in the raid, their families, their lives, the aftermath and their descendents and legacies which continued to affect us in our country today. a small story in the washington post in 2000, the plaque is dedicated in a cemetery near fedex field in maryland. it was inside the metro section and made a big impact, when i left the post in 2004 i wrote a longer article about him. through my research, i called a noted john brown scholar and said why is so little written about these men, john anderson at the time was what i was focusing on, and written the only insider account, so survivor of the raid, treated dismissively by other historians. he said to me two reas

blight: yes, and then john brown came in he realized what john brown was going to do. but at the and of the war, at least the way douglass remembers it, he thought that he had won. he called it his congregation abandoned, his church was gone -- meaning his abolitionist movement -- what is a radical reformer do when you your cause wins? dickenson was a completely unreconstructed anti-confederate. >> very much with the war effort, she did a tour in march -- much of the confederacy in i think 1873, where she draws huge crowds of people who hate her. it is very interesting because the press would not cover her, but the people would show up. i think it was in virginia, i forget now, she is talking to a southern white woman who is right out of kerry jennings'first book, and the are -- they are talking about the war, this is in the early 1870's. and she refers to the command this woman says, that general lee. and i think he says, i will have none of that. he was not a general. and so these two sort of highly politicized women 10 years after the war are not giving up any groun

it is not just the picture of john brown. kansas was the first place for abolitionists to free 6lack people. kansas was the first state to support the emancipation proclamation. kansas and the 1870's became a place where people would come and be free, not just black folk. people from eastern europe, russia, came to central kansas, because it was the place they hoped to be free. black folks felt the same way and they made it to kansas at the same time, including the most oppressed of the oppressed from alabama and mississippi. they made their way to kansas. i want to tell you a story about a former sharecropper. tale.imizes the exodus john solomon be -- lewis. remember the story, if you don't remember the name. his family gets way behind in debt. their owner threatens them with violence and they decide, we have to get out of. if we stay, we may be killed. family leave their cabin in the middle of the night. they go down your the swamp near the mississippi river and wait and hope a steamboat will come and pick them up. they wai

. -- who doesn't know about john brown? kansas in the 1850's attracted a dedicated group of abolitionists and those abolitionists would run the underground railroad, essentially helping to shepherd african-americans out of slavery and into freedom. i'm going to show you a few slides. and are women abolitionists. they hid black slaves. sarah robinson was the life -- the wife of a governor. this was the dedication to freedom on the part of some in kansas at that particular time. i want someone else to read this statement. here it is, protecting the fugitive slave. you are getting quite a workout here. any volunteers to read this statement? >> this is the story of the protection of a fugitive slave named caroline in 1861. quintard: i am going to try to deal with the reasons they don't agree with that. this is the situation that's going on. white men, going to free black men in missouri. kansas at least in the beginning , kansas in the beginning pays tribute to the abolitionists. this is the first of two bank pictures that i to

as he discovered in his struggle with john brown. but he was more than ready to wield his pin and voice -- his pen and voice to destroy slavery, slaveholders and anyone shouldering arms in their defense, and he was willing to send his own son. a very difficult problem in his he left ushough almost nothing of his own thoughts about that. the contest must now be decided and decided forever, douglass demanded in march of 1861, slavery, lest the conflict, and god speed the right. when the war had again, he rejoiced. for this consummation we have watched and wished with fear and trembling, got we praise that it has come at last. there he is. this is douglass in january 1863. , for douglass, the road to war had been emotionally and intellectually a crooked one. with great into the patient, he waited resident lincoln inaugural address, and it dominated douglass by fear that the government had been allowed by the previous buchanan administration to in his words, float to the verge of destruction. 1818, he gathered at the train station to get
