carol: but we start with john cessarich. what do we expect tonight? john: you can see this band on the super doppler. the says cooled off the entire atmosphere, not just at the surface, but this is cooling down in the upper 20's, and we have freezing rain and sleet, because we have a warm slot that came right over the cold doma -- dome, and it turns into water, and that is how you get that freezing rain. it freezes instantly, so this means as long as everything is be all snow. this and is producing one to two inches of snow. and this goes into the eastern part of buncombe county. they have already had about a foot of snow on top of the mountain. 16 inches. that is the most snow i have found so far, i top of mount mitchell. saluted, 11.5 inches. at the regional airport, 10.16 inches of snow, and that is the most snow we have recorded. there was a recoco set back in 1987 there was some sleet mixed in with these snowfall amounts. a little over half a foot of snow in rutherfordton. in south carolina, top honors seven inches. inman, 4 4 inches.

we have the two experts, chief meteorologist john cessarich and meteorologist chris justus. john, let's begin with you. john: chris and i were talking the last couple days about potential for snow. if we got some, it would be scattered snow showers. it does not look like the system will be too far -- it looks like the system will be too far southeast. flurries and may be snow showers for the mountains, and that would be saturday night late into sunday morning. but that's it. we have missed the system. today, absolutely gorgeous. we warmed up nicely into the upper 50's to low 60's across the western carolinas and northeastern georgia except for the northern mountains, who only reached the upper 40's to around 50. current temperatures right now as the sun has gone down, the temperatures cooled quickly. 37 in boone. 51 in asheville and hendersonville and greenville and anderson. cooling down quickly. 54 right here in greenville. chris is in the weather center. we have looked at the systems, the models have been all over the place. it is a sure bet that the system will be too far

the ski resorts, plenty of skiers and snowboarders taking advantage, and a chief meteorologist john cessarich is here, working hard to get this next round will come in strong, right? john: right, much stronger, and i will talk about that in just a second. in the upper atmosphere, this is not extremely strong, but it did i will show you some storm reports in just a second. south of 85, mainly rain mixed with some sleek at times, and also some snow from time to time. in greer, some sleet mixed with snowflakes. northeastern georgia, a little bit of sleet, and 1.5 inches of snow in one area, especially in the mountains of north carolina, about one inch of snow. just a dusting in waynesville. those pictures, how about that? 3.5 inches of snow. 4.5 inches fell on top of mouth mitchell. there was a dusting and 2.5 inches or actually 1.5 inches in robbinsville, 1.5 inches. you can see for the most part, about an inch and a half, a dusting to a couple of inches of snow that feltoday. now, round two. a much more powerful system that starts tomorrow night ands through tomorrow night and into saturday. s

everyone is staying home on this friday night, and it is a good carol: chief meteorologist john cessarich has been tracking temperatures and precipitation all day. john, what's the latest? john: as michael mentioned, it does not take much to have fun, of snow across the area, as you can see. we will see an additiona of one inch to three inches, certainly more possible in the upstate. this is cold air now from aloft in the middle of the atmosphere, which is sinking down to the surface. we are obviously cold enough now in the 20's for the most part to see snow. now we are finally getting rid of what we call a warm nose, a warm layer that goes over the dome of colder air at the surface where temperatures were at 32 degrees or below. people are wondering, well, 28, 27 degrees, where is the snow, john? as expected, the air gets above the cold air, we have the melting in the warm layer, turns into raindrops, and then freezes on contact at the surface with temperatures belrethat is how we end up with freezing rain. remember, rain is something that falls and hits something solid and turns into ic
