john chambers, the former chairman and ceo of cisco, shared his perspective on the situation. ♪ is notdo look at the individual moves in the chest came but look at the big picture. the big pictures the relationship between the u.s. and china, and i have been in china over 40 years. it has developed into win-lose with the u.s. losing. there is not a level playing field, this is how american companies are treated in china, the industrial espionage is at an unacceptable level and we have to get back to a better balance. i do agree that the u.s. had to address this. in both, it is countries best interest that we get a resolution. i'm more optimistic than others that the resolution will curb, but the right way to ask it is not about delaying tariffs. the resolution on the election property protection, a level playing field between the businesses and the countries and do it in a way where both countries win. i am probably more optimistic this will be resolved over the next week. >> one of those stories connected with this is how invent tech made hp equipment and is shifting its operations so

john f. kennedy was assassinated. he never gave the speech until many years later when he is invited back to speak in the old senate chambero inaugurate a series of lectures about senate history. and mike mansfield said something really profound about the responsibility of the united states senate. he said in the end it is not the senators as individuals who are of fundamental importance, in the end it is the senate itself is one of the foundations of the constitution . it is the senate as one of the rocks of the republic. mike mansfield and burton k. wheeler probably did not agree on much . but they certainly agreed on that idea it. that the senate as an institution has a unique responsibilities in our government. and the unique responsibility pertains to every member of the u.s. senate to exercise those responsibilities. wheeler and mansfield were senate constitutionalist. this is an idea that i want you to keep in mind tonight. in my reading, particularly the history of burton k. wheeler, we find somebody who has great reverence of the institution of the senate. and believes that the u.s. senate enters can only represen

those who were influential in the chamber given their special talents and you at a young age have exposure to one of these informal leaders, very prominent senator john sherman cooper who is influential in helping end u.s. involvement in the vietnam war and promoting civil rights legislation. can you give some of your impressions or reflections on havingn. worked for john sherman cooper and observing him at a young age. >> yeah, i was telling [inaudible] that we were discussing before coming down to start this when you are that age you always looking around for someone to think i like to be like him or her when i grow up and for me there was john sherman cooper who i got a chance to intern with him in washington in the summer of 64 when the filibuster was broken on the civil rights bill in 1964. i've been an intern in the house the year before and was there when martin luther king delivered his i have a dream speech. went back in 65 when my internship with cooper but just got lucky to have it on friday and took me over to the rotunda and watched lbj find the voting rights act of 1965. wow. this was a guy who never held a leadership position in the se

chamber. i was surprised to see both of them. can you guys read the names? barely can read the names. charles robinson. john brown. a. h. reeder. these are abolitionists. their names are inscribed in the state capitol, in the state capitol building in topeka. other names. j.h. lane. james montgomery. other names of abolitionists inscribed in the state capitol building. kansas then becomes this place of freedom. now, i'm going to say that, yes, there were whites who were dedicated to the freedom of freeing of black people and i think we have to give them credit here. but ultimately it was the black people who freed themselves. the vast majority of the people who would become free. look at these figures. in 1860 there were only 627. in 1865 there were 12,000. these 12,000 represented 9% of the population which is a larger percentage than there is of black folks in kansas to this day. so why did that happen? let me suggest a confluence of geography and politics. geography meaning on this side of the line, there were a lot of slave holding counties. some of the most intense slave holding counties were in the missouri valley and alo
