john cochrane. well, you can have a different name and to be memorable in that way anyhow, i'll share a few thoughts, maybe fill a data point or two that the john cochrane probably just didn't have time to get to. and then talk a bit about. the great depression, where i think our conversation is going next. so mr. charles opened our panel saying that there's a myth that the 1920s exuberance you often hear caused the great depression. it was a necessary correction, that of this sort of out of control environment, both in the way people lived and the way they invested and way that they ran their businesses in their lives, had cause of crash. and that was the retribution for the irresponsibility of the era. well, the evidence doesn't really seem suggest that out, but the myth continues. in fact, just just the last day or two, i saw a tweet from a well-known tweeter, and it said those who praise calvin coolidge remind me of a story of the man who jumped of the top of the empire state building. and as he

john cochran remembered that episode and said in his closing arguments, if it doesn't fit, you must acquit. another spectacle of the '90s, clearly, was that of the impeachment and trial of bill clinton in 1998 and 1999. clinton was the first u.s. president, elected president, ever to be impeached and put on trial. he was acquitted at trial before the u.s. senate. but the spectacle was unprecedented. he faced charges of obruction of justice, of perjury, stming from his inner minute affair with a formerntern 27 years his junior. he was acquitted, as i say, but the former intern, monica, was shamed and shunned. and only in recent years has she emerged from the shadows. the case had the effect of deepening partisan divide, partisan bitterness in the country. those divides, those cleavages have become only more pronounced in the years since the 1990s. so, this partisan rancor in some respects can be traced to the clinton spectacle, a spectacle of impeachment and trial for a sitting u.s. president. there are more spectacles of the '90s, too. cases of terrorism, including the oklahoma city bombin

i think john cochran in the last panel had a very good point about how coolidge did not get in the way. there could be five or 10 or 100 good books written about how politicians, and especially regulators, will see some favorable trend happening and try to get in front of the parade and screw it all up. i will give you a couple of examples. we could have had cell phone at least 15 years earlier than we got them. but for federal government regulations that prevented the market from emerging. my favorite story that almost no one knows. you go to the late '70s. is about halfway between today and the age of coolidge. fax machines were starting to be commercialized. it was slow, expensive, and clunky. you could see it would change the nature of the way officers work, but couriers out of work and so forth. the post office shows up in the frederick medications commission and says, in the law we have a monopoly on the transmission of all first-class mail. and these fax machines will be transmitting mail. therefore, fcc, you should restrict fax machines to be only installed in post offices. to
