but let's bring in john cohen tonight, abc news contributor, former fbi. john, there are so many questions about what happens now with this investigation. take us through this process. where do they begin? >> well, the first thing they're going to do is they're going to identify the suspect. they're going to try to determine through by evaluating their social media, their communications, their interactions with other people that they are associates with, whether this was an act of a lone offender or whether it was part of a broader conspiracy. they're also going to be looking for any type of follow on events, part of the danger in a situation like this is that people may view this as either an act to be replicated or may seek to respond. so law enforcement very quickly across the country, quite frankly, is going to be looking at trying to prevent any residual events following this incident. >> john, thank you very much. and we do know that the fbi is joining the secret service in this investigation. let's go back to martha raddatz. martha, you've been talki

. >> cnn's zach cohen is with us this morning with the latest zach, what are you seeing here? >> john communication was clearly a problem and specifically the communication between local officers and the u.s. secret service on the day of the rally, as you just mentioned. and as we heard in that soundbite, local swat team says that they did not get a face-to-face briefing with the us secret service before the rally started. and those communication issues seem to have person just to take a listen to what the swat team told abc about the lack of communication between not just us secret service and local swat team, but also with the pennsylvania state police multiple agencies working together is always taxing no matter what the problem. i know that we could not communicate with secret service or pennsylvania state police or really in effort, the patrol directly so that lack of communication raises new questions about when did local officers notify us secret service that they had identified the suspicious looking individual who would later turn out to be the would-be assassin. >> these tex

. >> cnn's zach cohen, part of the reporting team that broke this is with us now is equity learning here yeah. >> john, the fbi dhs, warn they can't rule out the possibility that domestic extremists may try to carry out a retaliatory attack of some kind in response to the attempted assassination of donald trump in, look, this new intelligent intelligence bulletin doesn't list any specific or credible threats, but it does broadly reinforced the assessment that the fbi and dhs have made over the past several years, that there's a heightened threat to election-related targets, and that domestic extremists do see political events, including rallies like the one on saturday as an opportunity to carry out this violence. not some specific examples. that dhs and the fbi are warning about in this bolton, they're worried about lone actors or extremist operating in small cells who, as i mentioned, see those political rallies as an opportunity. there are also warning about these hoax bombs, hoax bomb threats, or a swatting attacks that might draw in an official response. thus creating an opportunity to carry out
