i'm here with john connors, no relation to the terminator, john connors.m rubicon. what are you doing right now? what are the immediate needs? and importantly, what you guys do, you focus a lot on long-term? >> right, right now we have 36 people who are deployed in support of boat operations here. >> volunteers, veterans. >> yep, all volunteers. we are about 70% veterans. 30% civilian first responders. and right now, we have three boat teams who are doing rescue operations, since monday, they've rescued over 50 people. and they'll be doing boat ops until the community doesn't need it anymore. and after that, we're setting up for a longer term recovery effort, we'll stay here for months and probably deploy about 1,000 volunteers. >> the boat operations, how organized are they at this point? obviously, team rubicon is pretty organized, but in terms of coordinating with other units. there's a group out here from the state, a maritime division. there's some volunteers over here. how do you -- do you coordinate? >> our team captains work with whoever is the lea

joining us on the phone, john connors.ou sound remarkably awake for only two hours of sleep in the past couple of days, thanks for being with us. >> it's great to be here, thanks for having me. >> leland: you are doing incredible worked on there. we're looking at live pictures as one of our camera crews are making its way down flooded street. >> what we do is unite military veterans and first responders and uses the skills of experiences that they get in the military and other stuff or situations and allows us to employ them and disasters safely and effectively. you take someone who has been in the marine corps or who has been a paramedic or an army medic and you put them in a situation like this where it is very chaotic and stressful. because of their experiences in the military, they are better trained and better prepared to handle these situations and respond effectively. >> leland: we talked yesterday with lieutenant general from the national guard" of that famous prussian general who said no plan ever survived initial

and joining us is john connors, member of team rubrubicon, an organization that brings together volunteers nor moments hike this. general, what's your assessment in terms of rescue operations and the flooding? >> well, the problem has gotten bigger. i mean, we have search and rescue missions ongoing. this is the hard part, after we pick people up with helicopters and using the emergency signals to find people, once this water goes down, anderson, every house has to be checked. and that cannot be done by civilian volunteers. without these volunteers, we would be in a mess, because the military has been slow to scale up. we should have navy ships to follow hurricanes in. we learned that in katrina and rita. yet, one of the biggest hurricanes predicted as of last thursday didn't have navy ships following it. we have to get this fixed, because we're at the beginning of hurricane season. that being said, the shelters look great. everybody is getting along as far as the government agencies. we don't have the bickering and the fighting. >> and the volunteer efforts are incredible. >> yes. but i w

tom: john is with us and mark connors in a more different world with hedge funds and risk at credit suissen of john's world to the hedge fund world? do hedge funds as a general statement one long only by side more traditional investors? does that work? mark: there's a crossover at times. if there's trends going up, the hedge fund community will have a net long. there's a basic correlation, but see investors what that saved less than 25%. that is what we see. tom: how do you respond? he's doing the oppenheimer company dance and has been successful at it. how do you and hedge funds respond to the canonization of a bill gross market? these are great people. gundlach is the real deal, but the punditry of a tuesday morning, how do you respond to that? mark: as far as where you want to allocate money and who is worth it. toinflection points, go back 2008 when the market was down on the order of 38% on the s&p in the year. hedge funds on average were down 15-20%. they had less downside and they captured the upside. if we are at inflection point, you will want a manager with the left hand and the
