working with john lewis, trying to do what we can with congressman sensenbrenner and congressman john conyers. we are trying to fix what the supreme court seems to have dismantled with that 1965 voting rights act. i'm hopeful that when we leave that bridge on sunday and go back to washington in a week that all the 98 congress people who are there will all sign on to mr. sensenbrenner's amendments, so that we can restore what the roberts court has done to that 1965 voting rights act. >> what do you make of these republicans pushing they voter i.d. requirements, and even in pennsylvania, the leadership which dominates the legislature saying we're openly doing this to say we're doing it to keep votes. that seems completely in violation of the purpose of the voting rights act, this game they're playing about voter i.d. cards. >> just as in 50 years ago, it took the congress to respond in a way that was favorable to the protection of people's rights, it may take that again today, because remember, these are 20 some odd individual states who are doing those things. i would hope that congress would

my thanks to representative jim sensenbrenner and to representative john conyers for co-sponsoring a revised version of the act. my thanks to john lewis who has kept selma and the voting rights act alive by his annual trips with members and others to selma. i am appreciative of the almost 100 members from both parties who went to selma on the 6th and 7th. what was the purpose of going? it could not have been a celebration. you can celebrate the 1964 civil rights act that's not been dismembered. you can celebrate the 1968 fair housing law, it still is on the books. but you go to selma to try to bring back to its full glory the voting rights act of 1965 with section 5 -- where section 5 has rendered the act virtually obsolete for most of its original purposes. i stress the supreme court did not invalidate the 1965 voting rights act. it invited the 100 members who went to selma and the others in this body to modernize the act. we may differ on how to do that. i do not think there can be any doubt that it has to be revised and we have to meet the challenge that the supreme court has given

i are to tell you i -- and i have to tell you i know he's got his problems, but representative john conyers is an unsung hero here. he has made the this his baby since 1988, one year after cc close key came down. and in virtually every year has introduced some sort of bill. .. and found there is a handful here. of very small group. they said we are going to try everything. we will try everything from let's go with the bill that just said is it is wrong, nothing more, condemns racial profiling and we ran the gamut. there were those introduced by representative maxine waters we would like some areas we know to be problematic to get federal pre clearance before proceeding with prosecutions that carry a capital sentencing possibilities and then there are others that did a number of other things but as i said, not a lot has happened here. there was a resolution that just wanted to -- follow me closely, the house of representatives that congress at some point in the future should encourage to condemn racial profiling. it went nowhere. none of these bills went anywhere. that in and of itself is pr
