now sensenbrenner is sponsoring a bill with john conyers of michigan, a bill that would reinstate parts of the act that the supreme court gutted out. there were only six republicans co-sponsoring the bill, six republicans out of all of the republicans nearly 250 of them in the house of representatives. among those republicans who are co-sponsoring that bill, republican congressman charlie dent of pennsylvania, and joining us now is republican congressman charlie dent of pennsylvania. congressman, i really appreciate you taking a few minutes to join us tonight. let me start with the bottom line question. the bill that you have your name on, we talked about the margins back in 2006 when it was 390-33 in the house to reauthorize it. if the bill with your name on it right now came to the floor and not a vote, would it pass? >> absolutely. and, steve, thanks for having me on the show. i absolutely believe that the sensenbrenner bill that would reauthorize the voting rights act that changes the formula would pass overwhelmingly and with strong republican support. true, only six republican co-

my thanks to representative jim sensenbrenner and to representative john conyers for co-sponsoring a revised version of the act. my thanks to john lewis who has kept selma and the voting rights act alive by his annual trips with members and others to selma. i am appreciative of the almost 100 members from both parties who went to selma on the 6th and 7th. what was the purpose of going? it could not have been a celebration. you can celebrate the 1964 civil rights act that's not been dismembered. you can celebrate the 1968 fair housing law, it still is on the books. but you go to selma to try to bring back to its full glory the voting rights act of 1965 with section 5 -- where section 5 has rendered the act virtually obsolete for most of its original purposes. i stress the supreme court did not invalidate the 1965 voting rights act. it invited the 100 members who went to selma and the others in this body to modernize the act. we may differ on how to do that. i do not think there can be any doubt that it has to be revised and we have to meet the challenge that the supreme court has given

john lewis, mr. conyers and others today will be introducing the voter empowerment act.ns are making it harder to vote and join a union. the attack on the ability to bring labor elections and regulations into the 21st century century. it is an outright attack not just on unions but on the right to organize. right to organize has been such a fundamental principle for progress for america's working families. today we expect to see a republican budget. i don't know if that will be possible. they were supposed to go back in this morning. i don't know if they have. but as we have discussed before budget is supposed to be a statement of our national values. what is important to us as a nation is where we should be allocating our resources. instead we see a republican budget that isn't. they haven't passed one yet, as you no he. but their initial statement is we would describe as work harder for less. harder to buy home harder to send a child to college, harder to secure a dignified retirement. again, the same old thing, old warmed-over stew. that's all i can call it, same old
