coolidge had the misfortune from a conventional point of view of dr. ingram in times, although that is not quite right. i think john cochran in the last panel had a very good point about how coolidge did not get in the way. there could be five or 10 or 100 good books written about how politicians, and especially regulators, will see some favorable trend happening and try to get in front of the parade and screw it all up. i will give you a couple of examples. we could have had cell phone at least 15 years earlier than we got them. but for federal government regulations that prevented the market from emerging. my favorite story that almost no one knows. you go to the late '70s. is about halfway between today and the age of coolidge. fax machines were starting to be commercialized. it was slow, expensive, and clunky. you could see it would change the nature of the way officers work, but couriers out of work and so forth. the post office shows up in the frederick medications commission and says, in the law we have a monopoly on the transmission of all first-class mail. and these fax machines will be transmitting mail.
