last night, he befriended a group of teenagers here at john d. morgan park. if you're not familiar, this is campbell's largest park. lots of redwood trees. up against campbell middle school. that were and the teens were hanging out when around 8:30, things went south. during this fight, police say he pulled out a hunting knife and stabbed the 16-year-old boy. >> something had to push him that way. and it's probably because they were jumping him or something. he's actually a good person. he's harmless. >> is tharp cooperating? >> completely cooperative so far. >> it could leave to a self-defense, but it's hard to tell. he did sustain some injuries. he was taken to the medical center and currently he's in custody at the jail. >> police initially responded to this because of a 911 call that a man had been beaten up and it turns out it was todd tharp. he needed to be taken to valley med for treatment. police let them know that their e.r. received a 16-year-old for a stab wound. they put the boy in surgery and he died around 3:00 this morning. again, campbell unif

we're told he was hanging out here at john d. morganpbell near the baseball field when the violence broke out. now, here's a photograph of 24- year-old todd tharp. campbell police say he's a transient. they have arrested him for the teen's murder. they say at 8:30 last night, the teen was with his friends near the bleachers of the baseball field. they got into an argument with tharp and it turned physical. tharp was beat up. the teen was stabbed. it's ununclear who injured who first. the boy is from san jose. police have been collecting evidence and conducting interviews. too find out more about how this came about, i'm joined by captain dave carmichael with campbell police. where are you at with this investigation? do we know if the group of teens knew this man? >> we don't know if they knew each other ahead of time. we're still looking into that possibility and haven't ruled that out. >> reporter: where are you at in the investigation? >> our time crime scene team has been out here and we're still following up and conducting interview
