the beach sits at the bottom of a nearly 500 foot cliff near john daly and skyline boulevard.is near the beach tonight with more on what is being described as a heartbreaking accident.>> reporter: it happened right here on a walking trail that this man and his dog were walking on. they were dating with similar conditions that we are dealing with right now. it was very windy and very cold. an official at the scene told me that the victims wife was here and she told him that until today, he had been walking these trails for the last 50 years.>> reporter: the rescue of this dog that was stranded on the cliff was as heart pounding as it was tragic. a call went out about a man and a doll that was in trouble while walking on the trail. the doll, which animal control said may be a shepherd mix, went down the rock and got stuck there. that is when the victim did what any animal owner would do and took a risk to rescue his friend. it was a move that cost him his

thornton state beach park is just south of lake merced.it's where john daly boulevard intersects withulevard.this fatal accident happened just before noonhere is closer look at what happenedthornton state beach is a popular dog walking park in daly city that over looks the ocean.there are miles of trails run along the cliff side.at times these trails are close the edge.just before 12pm monday afternoon, north county fire requested the assistance of the chp air patrol unit for a cliff rescue. this is video from the california highway patrol helicopter as they approached the cliffs of thornton beach. chp says a 67 year old man was walking his dog when that dog fell over part of the cliff near the top.the unidentified climb down to retrieve his dog when he slipped and fell 500 feet. he died.chp was able to rescue to the dog. the dog was unharmed and is now with members.we are waiting for more details to emerge like if the weather here played a role extremely windy at this cliff side park today. nats - wind at times gusts of 40-50 miles an hour would blow through these trailsthe national
