dean. jessica, control of the senate could come down to pennsylvania. both mem med oz and john fetterman on are on the campaign trail tonight. what do we expect to hear from them? >> reporter: wolf, we're hearing their closing arguments to voters here in the commonwealth of pennsylvania as election day is upon us. we have mehmet oz trying to cast himself as an independent voice, as a moderate. he's been enforce bid former president donald trump. he appeared with him at a rally over the weekend, but didn't say his name, didn't say the name of the gubernatorial candidate doug mastriano either. he pitched independent and conservative democrats as well. in the meantime, john fetterman trying to cast oz as a phony, saying he's not who he says he is. fetterman instead saying to voters he's the person that has been in pennsylvania, that while he had his stroke in may, it knocked him down but he got back up. that's what he'll continue to do. that's the message we've heard again and again from both of these candidates as they try to make it to the finish line in this race. it's a super

john. >>> so any minute senate republicans will be voting on who will be their leader. mitch mcconnell is facing a rare challenge from a fellow republican. jessica deans on capitol hill for us with the latest. jessica, rick scott is making a go for it. what are you hearing? >> reporter: good morning. what we know is we just heard from mcconnell's spokesperson, they did fight back and mcconnell managed to win in the first round, and they are not delaying this vote. there had been a push for some senate republicans, including scott and others to delay this leadership vote. that did not go through. they are not imminently moving to their leadership vote. as you mentioned, it's mitch mcconnell against rick scott, scott mounting this long-shot challenge. it doesn't appear he has nearly enough votes to beat mcconnell. it is worth noting that he is challenging mcconnell. he's never had a real challenger like this, so it speaks to the deep division within the republican party both on the way forward, how close they want to be to donald trump, how central he will play into their path moving forward, and the messaging, what the path is forward. before all of t

pennsylvania's jessica dean at the headquarters of current lieutenant governor, john fetterman. the battle for control of the senate could hinge on the race. what is the thinking in the fetterman campaign headquarters? >> reporter: yeah, it certainly could, skjake, and across the country, democrats are playing defense. here is where they could play offense. an open senate seat, republican pat toomey is retiring, and democrats would love to pick this up. i talked to several campaign sources late this afternoon, and one of them acknowledging this is a jump ball, we know this is an incredibly tight race. what we are confident in, they closed it out as strongly as they could. the campaign feels like the last five days have been very good for them. they highlight the oprah winfrey endorsement that came late thursday and dominated the local news cycle on friday. they had the rally with former president obama and president biden in philadelphia, and one here in pittsburgh with obama, and they really feel like that has really lifted and given them a lot of momentum heading into today, e

john fetterman defeated oz and flipped the seat from republican hands. jessica deanom the fetterman camp? >> reporter: anderson, this morning the fetterman campaign is obviously quite delighted with this outcome. they told me last night they were very confident in what they had done in the last five days. they felt like they had closed out the last five days in the strongest way possible. they actually pointed to that endorsement from oprah winfrey as helping them with suburban women, a target demographic. it played in last night. and then also the rallies with former president obama and president biden. they also really believed that mehmet oz undercut his own message of being a moderate by appearing at that real with president trump and standing on the same stage as him. they felt confident but said we think it's a jump ball. that changed when the numbers started coming in last night. they were specifically watching bellwether counties to see if they could outperform president biden in 2020 when he won the commonwealth of pennsylvania and also if they could keep oz

john fetterman maintained a healthy lead and that lead now down to a slight edge. the widely talked about debate may not have been the deciding factor many thought it might. cnn's jessica dean is on the trail in pennsylvania. she joins me now. why are folks thinking that right now, because certainly the attention leading to the up debate and following, there was an enormous amount of focus? >> reporter: there was so much focus on it, jim. an a lot of attention. but listen, when you talk to voters here, they are very focused on issues and thinking kind of beyond the debate as a data point for them, but they have so many other things their focused on, economy, and crime and abortion rights and we have a new poll that gives us additional data points in this ever-tightening race that is so critical in this midterm election. let's take a look at what they found. they asked if the debate was a factor in their decision. 51% of those polled said yes. 47% saying no. so that is one data point we have. let's look again at kind of a head-to-head match-up. that shows no clear leader but fetterman with 55% of the vote and oz 42%. and that is in the margin of error. and then i think the t
