cbs political reporter john dickerson is in our studio. good morning, john. >> good morning, anthony. >> margaret talked about the review of the irs, the acting chief has been kicked out. is this enough for the president to move beyond it or will the story linger do you think? >> the best terms of the president moving on from this is that for the moment there is no connection outside the irs to the white house as well. so without that bridge from the president to the irs, it protects him a little bit from that. we'll see as the hearings continue and the real story comes out of the irs just how bad it was. but in order for it to be a continuing headache for the president, it doesn't look good but to be a real headache it has to have some closer tie to him. >> and john aside from the irs, there have been two other scandals this week the ap monitoring benghazi. how well do you think the white house has handled these so far? >> well it was pretty ragged at the beginning, in part because in the case with the irs and the associated press investig

cbs news political director john dickerson is in washington. what's the takeaway from the poll?s important to do is look inside that poll and not everybody opposes the president's health care law for the same reason. 35% say it's too liberal. 16% say it's not liberal enough. so the different shape of the opposition is important. why is it important now? because we're about to head into the third election where this will be an issue. in 2010 and 2012, we didn't know what the law was going to look like. in 2014, the law will start to be implemented and there will be actual facts that people can look at. >> how is the health care policy going to play in the republican strategy for 2014? >> well, for republicans, the affordable care act is the gift that keeps on giving. for conservatives, it's the perfect example of government run totally haywire. it's huge, it's complicated. it affects you in a way that really gets at your daily life. and so republicans will be going back at that and talking about how it will ruin this thing you love. but there is a small downside for republicans,

cbs political analyst john dickerson is with us. is this something that they're trying to cover up or does it have to do with the hillary clinton campaign for 2016? >> both.both. there's the rewriting of the talking points and that looks like a coverup as john mccain calls it. but let's not go too far with that language. right now it looks like a covering that goes back and forth. it may grow to be more. coveri but that kind of bureaucratic protecting of turf is different than a highly orchestrated by hillary clinton approach that some are suggesting. are >> no smoke and gun. >> not yet but there's more and smoke now than there was a week there's before and that gives people a legitimate reason to follow. smok >> i think there are more questions like why pickering never interviewed secretary of state hillary clinton, nor her top two deputies. this is something that happened eight weeks before the election. was there politics involved? >> of course there were politics involved.e the question is where did it stop. in a bureaucratic de

cbs news political director john dickerson is with us from washington. good morning.our take on this? >> well, in talking to governor's staff this morning, they say this is about him turning 50 and doctors said this will catch up with you some day. he wants to be around for his kids. but of course this is seen in the presidential context. he went in and had outpatient surgery on presidents day weekend to make sure everything is sufficiently parallel here. you know remember that haley boush barbour said if i lose 50 pounds it's because i'm running for president or i got sick. chris christie in typical fashion is cutting to the chase doing this. cutting to the middle. >> it's not possible this has nothing to do with politics. it's all about health. >> right. exactly. >> i have a bridge for you. >> of course this has that second element. >> it's amazing that the governor has been able to keep this under wraps for several months now and apparently he's lost 40 pounds. he's facing re-election as governor. he's been the butt of jokes and he's also been pretty adamant about

let's talk it over with john dickerson who is in our washington bureau. good morning, john. >> good morning, anthony. >>> to start with the president has put joe biden back on the offensive on the gun control case. how effective is the strategy do you think? >> well the real question on gun control is what's going to happen in the senate and so joe biden in the first round of this and anything he does further to kind of raise kind of aware nltz is owe awareness is fine. the question is what can be done to put together a coalition of votes among the senators? and that looks like the energy there is still with the senator from west virginia joe mansion, and the senators who are working on this more than the vice president. >> and so john this would realistically entail convings a handful of senators who voted one way a couple weeks ago to suddenly change their minds and vote another way. what realistic is that strategy? >> well that's -- you lay it out the right way. that's a tough hill to climb for those senators because then they would look like they don't

. >> i think john dickerson of slate said this scandal is making mitt romney's argument better than mittde it. i'm sure you wouldn't disagree. >> i cannot underestimate the importance of scandal, not for the purpose of in and of itself a problem, although certainly it could be, depending on what we find out. but it does raise a lot of other issues and allows people to sort of drop their guard a little bit which may be a personal affection for the president or loyalty to the president just because he's the president and look with a more skeptical eye. i think the timing couldn't be better, frankly, because obama care is just about to ramp up and go into effect. and it is a -- going to be -- it is already a disaster. lit be an unmitigated disaster. you've seen reports coming out with insurance rates, depending on the state that may be double, triple, four times for some people what it is today because, directly linked to this proposal or to this law. you may see uninsured rates go down, not up, expense go up, not down. these are really serious issues. >> uninsured rates go up, not down. >>

cbs news john dickerson. good morning. >> good morning. >> what's going on? >> the key question is what started all this? how did these managers get inspired to do this? was it really just the case load? there wasn't a huge ballooning of it. there's an investigation about how this started and then as nancy mentioned, who knew what when and that's the question that might get over to the white house. so far we've seen no evidence of that. that's the question that has to be answered. it's become the big political scandal for the white house. >> what about the point that nancy just made that it weakens the argument of a coverup if they knew this was being investigated last year. >> right. there's no evidence of a coverup. to the extent that they should have known, that's kind of a p.r. issue. that is to say you hould have seen it coming so be better prepared for it than you were, but there's no evidence that they knew about it for a long time. >> what happens with the white house and the president. we heard over the weekend that the white house chief of staff has
