. >> john dickerson is cbs news political director and host of "face the nation." so, john, we have seen these very heated protests against donald trump continue. how worried is the rnc that its convention could look like what we saw in new mexico and california this past week? >> i think they're worried. they believe that a lot of the protests are setups. this isn't people just expressing their first amendment rights but that these are mischief makers trying to cause calamity for the republicans they're well aware of it. authorities, in ohio, are well aware of it. and so, they'll any just have to hopefully manage it. but we won't know until we get there. >> turning to the democrats how much of a set back for the clinton campaign is the e-mail controversy? >> the e-mail report from the inspector general at the state department is a problem for two reasons. one it reminds people of questions they had about the way hillary runs her affairs. that, questions have been there for, for a long time. and the other problem is that it gives a real-time fresh example of some of

so this is why i'm so mind ted. >> dickerson: you mentioned lucifer that was comment made by former house speaker john boehner, former colleague of yours. >> he's a friend. dickerson: he's a friend. you're trying to survive as candidate that's not a great thing to have said about you. >> no. but there's a simple word going on in the republican party. john and i are very close friends but he's embracing donald trump and i am not. why, because i believe donald trump's foreign policy isolationism will lead to another 9/11. trump doesn't understand the obama-clinton mistakes. they didn't intervene in iraq, they withdrew from iraq. obama didn't intervene in syria, he failed that against sound military advice when it would have mattered in syria. people rose up against gadhafi. not to follow through and trump never mentioned afghanistan so his foreign policy to me to just isolationism, we're either going to fight radical islam over there in their back yard or in our back yard. but trump is the most unelectable candidate we could put up against hillary clinton. women and hispanics hate his guts for good reas

joining us now is john dickerson, our cbs news director and the anchor of "face the nation." john, what did you make of ted cruz today? >> the clock is running out for ted cruz. indiana was favorable for him. it was a state he had to win. the voting population there is more conservative than they were in last week's northeastern states, and he had the endorsement of the republican governor. and if he doesn't win, that not only will allow trump to amass more of those delegates toward accumulating that he needs, but it really weakens cruz's case in the future contests, and if this race goes to an open convention, losses like this make it even harder for cruz to argue that the g.o.p. should deny donald trump, who will rack up a lot more votes tonight and a lot more delegates. >> pelley: an open convention seems less and less likely now. what are you looking for from the democrats in indiana tonight? >> it's all about what bernie sanders does. first he has to win really big, as nancy mentioned, to shrink hillary clinton's pledged delegate lead, and because his campaign now release

john dickerson is cbs news political director and host of "face the nation." john, donald trump says he doesn't necessarily need to unify the party. is he right? >> reporter: well, it makes his life harder if he doesn't. he does need the party in the sense the republican party has been doing a lot of spade work in these neighborhoods and has the lists of voters and teration to turn out the vote. donald trump needs that. does he need every single republican behind him? no. does he need to do anything that would lose the passion of the people who voted for him? he probably doesn't want to. but he can't totally dismiss the party. >> quijano: on the democratic side, hillary clinton told you that she's not running against donald trump. what did she mean? >> reporter: what hillary clinton is trying to do is show that she has her own separate agenda. she and her campaign know that they're going to get into a back-and-forth with donald ndump. they're already in one. what she doesn't-- what they don't want to have happen is rave people look up and think after months of

good morning, welcome to "face the nation" i'm john dickerson. joining us now to talk about campaign 2016 is senator bernie sanders he's on the campaign trail in santa barra. senator, i wanted to ask you, looks like debate is not going to happen do you think he was ever serious about that debate? >> donald trump said he wanted to go forward he changed his mind, no, then changed his mind said, no, maybe get call he'll say yes again. this is what donald trump is. i think the american people should be very concerned about somebody who keeps changing his mind, not only on this debate but on virtually every issue he's been asked about. >> dickerson: he said, quote, the democratic nominating pros is totally rigged he went on to say that hillary clinton will no do you agree with his characterization? >> i have been very touched by donald trump's love for me. but, john, all due respect i think that maybe some aspect of this, which he thinks will advantage himself. i do appreciate his love and his compassion for me but i don't really accept his words. loo

john dickerson: republicans do not want

part of his conversation with john dickerson. >> what is the goal of the sanders' campaign?e democratic nomination and win the general election. right now we are 45% of the pledged delegates. there are ten states and other contests coming up. we think we are strong in many of the states. california. our largest state. we think we have a chance to win the majority of pledged delegates. an uphill fight. admit it. need to win 65% of the votes. states coming up are favorable. number two. we think we can make the case. super delegates. there are many super delegates. now, incredibly. supporting secretary clinton in states that we have won 60%, 70% of the vote. we think we have the right to make the case to those delegates. go with the majority of your state. number two. super delegates in general, she is beating us 10 to 1. she is the establishment candidate. our argument, take a look at which canidate is better suited to beat donald trump. every poll that i have seen, national, statewide, says that bernie sanders is the stronger candidate. we appeal not only to the overwhelming

face the nation host john dickerson. >>> these never trump republicans, they get on born or left behindnothing they can do about it now. >> there is talk after 3rd party. what you are seeing is republicans getting behind donald trump. one of the reasons he is close with hillary clinton and some of these crucial battleground states is republicans are lining up behind him much more than people would have expected. >> while trump is focusing on hillary clinton, bernie sanders is still there and a lot of the talk this week about this possible debate ee not going to happen but what was this about and is it done with and dead for sure? >> it looks like the balloon has popped. it would have been kind of good for both candidates, bernie sanders would have gotten the match-up that he keeps talking about. polls in which he is ahead of donald trump by a larger margin. donald trump would have gotten a huge audience and a way to make his pitch and a way to mix with the democratic race. he was shutting out hillary clinton. they would have gotten something out of it but doesn't look like it will happe

clinton spoke with john dickerson on face the nation. >> secretary clinton you said donald trump is ae cannon, you saide are you suggesting he is not of sound mind? >> i think that being a loose cannon means saying that other nations should go ahead and acquire nuclear weapons for themselves, when that is the last thing we need in the world today. being a loose cannon is saying we should pull out of nato. the strongest military alliance in the history of the world. and something that we really need to modernize but not abandon. i think saying that he is a loose cannon really focuses on some of the statements he has made which i find concerning. going back to torture. killing terrorist's families which would be a war crime. and those are just some of the concerns that i hear people talking about which i think does fit the definition of a loose cannon. >> but you are not making any claims about his underlying stability? >> i'm talking about what he has said in this campaign. and continues to say. and the kind of agenda he is putting forth for our country which obviously i think would, n
