please welcome, john dickerson! back. >> stephen: and i hope we get to see a lot more of you because now you're just around the corner at the broadcast center on 57th street. >> i'm capitol hill any time you want me. >> stephen: okay, great. cbs, "face the nation," it is the longest running show on cbs. you anchored it for two years. your mother started off at cbs working at that show as an associate producer. sunday was your last show. was that a-- was that a tough show to do? >> yeah, it was very tough, because you know what it's like when you work with people in stressful conditions, high stakes, you bond with them. you care a lot-- let's see if i can get through this description without losing it-- you care a lot about the people you work with. the work is important. they all care as much as you do, and i get to go out there and, you know, for an hour benefit from all of their hard work, and you want to-- you can't stop saying, "thank you." so it's really hard to leave that incredible experience. but i have this

john dickerson of "face the nation" and political director. good to see you john.dent says he never met with this author. wolf says he did. so who are we to believe. >> in a sense the response to the book echos the reporting in the book which is to say that the way the presidency is characterized and the president and the white house is ar alternate reality reigns in which the president's impulses. that is a story we've been reading in one form or another and seeing play out with the number of people who have been fired or dismissed from the white house. we've seen that play out over a year. so in a sense this book comes in a context of previous reporting that's very much like it. so the reaction is familiar. so whether on the specific details of the various things being debated, what the truth of that is that's going to take a little while to work out. but in a sense the white house very strong reaction. steve bannon is all kind of keeping with the picture of a chaotic white house and a chaotic president. >> john, what is the consensus on the author michael wolf?

face the nation host john dickerson. so john, i wonder about the practical effect of these comments. we know we're talking about it. we know that politicians are talking about it but is it taking time away from talking about and doing the important things that need to happen right now? government shut down? daca? border security? >> i guess the practical effect is not just bad language it's just the mind set of grouping people based on the color of their skin or where they are from is amp thet cal in the way that most americans think of their country and certainly that kind of vulgar language talking about groups of people in that vulgar way is not a way and most people associate that behavior with the president. it puts republicans in a tricky spot because they're running for re-election in 2018 and they worry about being tied to the president. a president that might turn off lots create a lot of enthusiasm in democratic voters who see this kind of behavior and who get offended at a deep personal level and then turn out

now let's bring in "face the nation" host john dickerson. so, john, congress has until friday to pass a spending bill, will congress be able to work together to avoid a government shutdown? >> well, there has been difficulty with congress working together and now it has been interrupted by this latest debate over the president's remarks in the oval office, now you have senators on the republican side who were in that meeting saying dick durbin the democratic senator that described its details is not telling the truth, so that is not likely to create a good atmosphere. plus there are plenty of policy disagreements, not only on the question of what happens with the dreamers but funding for the children's health insurance, for the military, for domestic spending, so it is a long list already, and it is a tough situation it has gotten tougher. >> quijano: john, the president tweeted this morning daca is probably dead. last week it looked like they were close to a deal that would protect people that were brought to this country illegally as childr

now let's bring in our chief washington correspondent and "face the nation" host john dickerson, so john, president trump met with republican leaders this weekend at camp david to discuss his agenda for 2018. how much of a distraction is michael wolff's book "fire and fury" for that agenda. >> well, it's a momentary distraction. so the agenda hasn't really gotten under way. they were able to get their planning meeting done at camp david. what may make it a longer distraction and something that maybe has more serious consequences is the president's response in talking about his fitness for office, which has extended this question of whether he is fit for office, by the president saying that he is a stable genius, keeps it in the story line. that could affect the ability to get anything done. >> quijano: in addition to extending the distraction, potentially, what is the larger significance of the president feeling the need to defend his intelligence and mental fitness? >> well, in one sense this is just the president being the president. he is a counter-puncher. so this is a predictable re

we turn now to john dickerson, our cbs news chief washington correspondent. and fairchgor the "face the nation." john, quite a statement today from the president. what do you make of it? >> you know, well, the start of the statement that starts, "steve bannon has nothing to do with me or my presidency." it's like saying you're not married to your ex-wife. it's true at the moment, but it doesn't erase the marriage. the president was responding to the comments in the book by michael wolff, and that book paints a picture of a campaign and a white house and a president unexpreepped in chaos. so the over-the-top statement by the president of the united states today about steve bannon doesn't really refute that picture, and in a way, may affirm it. >> glor: john, steve bannon has insisted he's going to play a large role in this big midterm election year. so where does this leave the administration and the republican party? >> you know, well, he is a searing critic of the republican establishment, much like donald trump was. and he has promised to help dethrone senat
