in an exclusive interview with savannah guthrie, john and elizabeth edwards' daughter, cate edwards ispeaking out for the first time since her father was acquitted on campaign finance charges. throughout the trial, cate edwards stood by her father. even as details of edwards' extra marital affair with rielle hunter were revealed. here is part of savannah's interview. with more to come tonight on "rock center" with brian williams. >> rielle hunter. have you ever met her? >> i have. a long time ago. early in the campaign. i'm sure she's not someone you spend a great deal of time thinking about. >> that's correct. >> she wrote a book and she said some pretty unpleasant things about your mom. i'm not going to repeat them. so that -- does that make you mad? >> yeah, of course. i mean -- i just thought it was, i thought it was a poor choice, i guess was all i can say. >> was it hard to forgive him? >> i think it's easier to stay angry than it is to forgive someone. forgiveness is the tough thing. but yes, it was hard. but we worked through it. >> do you think your mom forgave him? >> i think

i want to bring in john allen, our senior vatican analyst. and we have father edwardme an idea of what we're seeing in this room. what's on those tables? what's going to go on in nair? >> well, what each of the cardinals will have on his table is a small book, you'll see the small book with the binding that has the prayers. this is one part political convention and one part going to church. so there will be prayers said for once this procession is finishthere's invocation of the holy spirit. the cardinals as a group in unison will say an oath, vowing to protect the secrecy of the conclave. then each cardinal, one by one, will process up and put his book hand on the book and swear to that secrecy. that is the first order of business when that extra omnes moment comes. we say technically, they don't have to take a vote. >> they could vote or not vote? >> they could. but the universal expectation, chris, they will decide to take a vote. in the wide open field, i think they're all anxious to see where the leading candidates stand. >> right now, after they finish what they

john allen. and father edward beck down in st. peter's square, a team of people down there, led by anderson cooper who is getting afeel for the excitement. we're watching from here as the swiss guard starts to seamible, getting ready for tpresentation of the pope. how high is the excitement? >> it is really building. you see people literally pouring in here by the second. thousands of people coming in. every now and then there will be a crowd of young people dancing as they move, try to get a position closer to the balcony. we talked with some americans here, you can hear a cheer going up in some parts of the crowd. it really is an incredibly festive atmosphere. people, as i said, from all around the world, i just talked to a woman who lived in new york but is from hungary, originally. everyone wants to be here. and you see people on their cell phones, they're talking to their loved ones around the world, or encouraging their friends or relatives elsewhere in rome to try to get here as quickly as possible. now that the rain has le

let's bring in john allen, the senior vatican analyst for us and father edward beck, cnn contributor,ass. it is a holy moment for them. of course they're praying for inspiration because they believe this is divinely inspired. they believe that god has already chosen the next pope. how heavy is the contemplation? how many big issues do they face, john? >> well, i mean, there's a laundry list of issues these 115 cardinals face. but if you listen carefully to what they were saying during the two weeks that we've had of a run-up to this decisive moment, seems to me three things loom especially large for them. one, they want a pope who has a global vision. who can embrace not just the catholics here in europe for north america, but the two-thirds of those 1.2 billion catholics who live outside the west. this mass this morning symbolizes the universality. we've heard prayers in multiple languages and so on. second, they want a cardinal or a pope who can evangelize, that is who can put a positive faith and voice on the catholic message, get people excited about the faith. and third they're l

senior vatican analyst john allen, also author, commentator and roman catholic priest, father edward beck. appreciate both of you being with us. much is being made about the divisions among these 115 cardinals. explain, if you can, the camps. >> well, whenever you've got a group of 115 guys who reached the pinnacle of their profession and they all have strong ideas about which way the church ought to go, divisions are inevitable. historically we handicapped these divisions in terms of geography, europeans versus new worlders, for example, or ideology, moderates versus conservatives. but i think the more relevant division in this conclave is at the level of business management, which is the central complaint that many cardinals have. there's a perception that benedict was a great teacher, but a subpar business manager. so what you've got is an old guard that is very attached to traditional ways of doing business in the vatican -- >> would that be -- a lot of people say it's romans versus reformers. that would be the romans you're talking about. >> yeah, although not all these guys are

i'm here with john allen our senior vatican analyst, father edward beck passionist priest. in looking at this man, pope francis, john, how much do we have to judge him by how he's been? because frankly, there is a concern that he is a traditionalist, in quotes, which means he is not going to advance social agenda or do the types of things many more reform minded catholics want to see. how much do you judge him by his past? how much can he change in the future? >> i think the book on cardinal bergoglio now pope francis would be looking at his record in argentina is that he would profile as a solid conservative on matters of doctrine, so that is issues such as abortion and gay marriage and those sorts of things he would be seen astra digsalist i guess in that sense. that is someone who would be a robustly orthodox -- opposed to gay marriage, contraception, and so on. however, the other part of that picture is, he also profiles as someone four square committed to the church's teaching on social justice, that is defense of the poor, defense of the downtrodden. in other words, it
