john edwards 12% president barack obama in early 2006 at this point in the race for the presidential on the radar at that point. he wasn't even there. later in the year when he made it clear he was thinking about it, numbers moved up by november. you have this poll. by november obama was 15%, clinton was 13%. he then went on to capture the presidential nomination and become the president of the united states. it's still early. lots can change. >> which is why when you confront a politician with a poll that he or she doesn't like, you can always say, oh don't trust the polls. that's true. i want to switch over to the republican side wolf, if i can. the poll on 2016 candidates. paul ryan is leading 20%, jeb bush just below 18%, chris christie polling in third at 13%. that's among republicans in total. if you narrow that down to tea party republicans, that dynamic shifts. ted cruz is in the top. he didn't replace top three republicans across the board. is this a big problem for republicans or something entirely different that could be mitigated? >> there's no doubt among tea party suppo

we hear candidates talk like that a lot and john edwards did.d it at inauguration, which is not the time we usually hear what is considered a message about breaking us apart. his point being that's part of bloomberg's legacy. >> well, there was a real paradox here, though. had you turned the sound down off that inauguration, what you would have seen was the mayor being sworn in by a president who had really pushed hard for financial deregulation. don't forget the most influential economic voice in president clinton's administration was robert reuben. and the -- there's a paradox here, because the recovery has been so uneven. but wall street is absolutely booming. so if mayor de blasio does have some running room and some flexibility and some resources to actually achieve some of the things that he is talking about, it will be in part because of the way this recovery has played out. the rich have definitely gotten richer and a lot of them live in new york and a lot of them pay big taxes and they work in the financial industry. >> yeah. it's a gre

"clinton pressed obama to arm the syrian rebels and later endorsed air strikes against the assad regime. clinton may have been the most reliable advocate for military action." how is that likely to play in iowa or new hampshire and places like that? >> it's going to be problematic. she was too far to the right in 2008. i think the iraq war gave obama the vote. it really crippled her chance at the white house. since then, she's not really tapped back to the left on those issues. time and time again she advocated military intervention, even in places where it was very unpopular. the afghanistan war, which people were not happy about, and the libya operation. the good news for her is that, of course, when she ran against obama in '07, '08, the iraq war was just a nightmare. it looked hopeless and was incredibly unpopular and sort of the number one issue on everyone's -- in

john edwards was saying there is not a red or blue american. president obama said that in the 2014 convention speech. there really are two americas. gays are allowed to get married and abortion laws are open to all. illegal and is abortion rights are being rolled back. focus on social issues in state legislatures trying to make that point. the gay marriage issue is off the table for the moment. every democratic legislature onept oregon has moved same-sex marriage. side, you havean seen a ban on abortion after 20 weeks. it has gone through the courts. it was just struck down in arizona. you will probably see them try to reinstate some version again. that has passed in 11 states. abortion, gay rights remained the focus of a number of efforts. marijuana is going to be a small issue this year. passed aer has legalization of marijuana. everything else has gone through the ballot boxes. the new hampshire statehouse. the senate is not going to take that till up. legalization will have to go through ballot issues rather than to the state legislatures.

saying bill richardson investigated john edwards. chris dodd step down.er to a punch line, dead. that is horrifying. and some other comments about senator kerry. how much credence do you give this, mark halpern? >> it's been known and reported that they had a strong recollection of all the people who had crossed her. those endorsements were not insignificant. that race was so close. the timing of those endorsements and the ones on tlas were huge in terms of getting the establishment shifted away from the clintons to president obama and i'm not surprised that they had a numerical rating at all because this is how strongly they felt about the degree of betrayal like bill richardson which president clinton put in the cabinet and the kennedy family they felt they had done a lot for. >> chuck todd? >> it's interesting. doug band was, in many ways, an enforcer a lot of times so democratic candidates running in 2010 and 2012, a lot of times they would get frustrated and run into a wall. they wanted bill clinton to campaign for them and couldn't get hillary clint
