with john elliott in the weather center. john? >> hey thank you mary, good afternoon everybody. the concerning is we could have -- concern is we could have a repeat of the storms with the heat and humidity. 89 is the air temperature reading but that doesn't tell the whole story. factor if the humidity it feels like 102 in the city. you have heat index values already in excess of 1 is hundred around the area. -- 100 around the area. it's an excessive heat warning for the city and also parts of northern new jersey. and into nassau county and around hi sunday. a good part of the weekend. it's a heat advisory for the rest of us. real quickly we'll show you there's not a whole lot going on right now as far as the potential for those storms. but we wait and watch. you have got this heat engine continuing to bring in the warm air out of the southwest. as we work our way into the afternoon and the critical evening hours for the yankees and giants, we're mindful of the possibility of some of these storms. it's going to be a very close call for evening activities. discharge and brief heav

john elliott has the forecast coming up. first though, a fire has left two men dead on the jersey shore, sources tell cbs2 the victims were a father and son. the flames broke out in belmar just after 9:30 last night. neighbors say the home had recently been renovated following superstorm sandy. >>> an arrest has been made in the murders of a queen imam and his assistant. they were killed over the weekend leaving a mosque. 35-year-old oscar morel faces two counts of murder and criminal possession of a weapon charges. police say they have strong evidence against him but still no motive for the crime. >>> a protest in queens over the city plan to turn a hotel into a homeless shelter. holiday inn at 55th road and maurice avenue last night. they say they don't want a shelter so close to schools and parks. the city says the neighborhood needs a shelter based on the local homeless population. a decision on converting the hotel is expected later this fall. >>> happening today, opening ceremonies for the new west field world trade ce

it looks nice right now but john elliott is on storm watch and he's tracking it all from the weather center. john? >> good afternoon cindy. hi everybody. so yeah you're right. heat is on. and the numbers as far as the that doesn't tell the whole tale. the heat index is 91 right now. we have a heat index of 98 in toms river. heat advisory continues until 10:00 p.m. for the city and much of central and southern new jersey. with those real feel numbers between 95 and really 100 plus. one active cell right now, this is some moderate rain in through parts of ulster county. that's about it for the time being. you can get a sense of a break. it's the winat the south bringing in that warm air and those higher dew points. this is the front we're waiting and watching for. we're concerned about some storms later today and in fact the national weather service concerned about the risk of severe weather. with heavy rain and gusty winds and maybe some hail and some lightning as well. but the good news is we're going to see a change. dew points will continue to climb this afternoon. but there is some

john elliott has our forecast coming up. first, several families are grieving this morning after a island expressway in suffolk county. it happened sunday morning in shirley. five people were killed and six injured when a car traveling east crossed the median and struck two other vehicles. among those killed was 29-year- old scott martella. he was a former aide to governor andrew cuomo, police say speed may have been a factor in the crash. >>> happening today, another court appearance for the accused of killer of a queens oscar morrell is facing charges, including first-degree murder. police say he shot the two men as they loft their mosque in ozone park ten days ago. morrell denies being the gunman. investigators say the motive is unclear. >>> and a home in midwood, brooklyn went up in flames overnight. the fire starting after 3 a.m. the home is said to be unoccupied and no injuries have been reported. firefighters were able to get the fire under control. in word what started it. >>> let's ge weather and talk about some sun
