evan. thank you so much. >> thanks. >> let's get back to john berman in orlando. john? >> kate, thanks so much. with me now cnn intelligence security analyst bob baer bair and counterterrorism analyst phil mudd. bob, he was casing the pulse before the attack. that's what investigators are now telling our evan perez. he had been to the pulse they believe to case it. he had been to disney springs they believe to case it. he had been to the gun store during that period of time when he was surveilling. so that in and of itself in the weeks before, what does that tell you? >> well, he was -- i mean, he clearly thought this true, but the important thing for the site which he attacked was a long gun. you do not want to take a long gun into a crowded area because it's very easy to get away. so i have no doubt about it, he was looking for a perch, some place where his back was covered. he had a sidearm, a pistol, a 9 millimeter. so if anybody got close he could use that or his gun jammed. so this guy had looked at tactics for sure. i mean, the count is just horrific. the way you arrive there is preparati

evan perez is following this for us. you have been all over this reporting. clear this up. what did this gun store tell the fbi exactly? >> reporter: right, john. there's been a lot of confusion because this gun store owner, the store is called lotus gun works in jensen beach, he reported after seeing the shooting in orlando said -- recognized that the person who carried out the shooting appeared to be a man who had been in the store some weeks earlier, about five weeks earlier, and was attempting to buy level three body armor, some higher level body armor. the store doesn't sell it, so he went away. he has since added some more detail to that saying that he heard him speaking in a foreign language and that he acted suspiciously. now, we know that around that same time, this same store had called the fbi to report some suspicious men, a group of men who had come in to buy police gear. they thought these people were from the middle east. the fbi came immediately and came to check it out. it turned out to be a group of law enforcement officers visiting from a middle eastern country and the purchase of the police gear was not suspicious at all. wh
