i talk about john f. kennedy a good bit in my book because i thought it would be useful to compare and contrast obama and john f. kennedy. john f. kennedy had a special burden when he ran for the presidency. what was his burden? catholic. there had never been a catholic president of the united states. she had a special burden. he had to go the extra in assuaging the anxiety of non catholics. he took special effort to say he was not going to be subservient to the po when it came to things political. he had to make a special effort to show that he was going to recognize the wall between church and state. he had to make special effort to do that just like barack obama had to take special effort to assuage the anxieties of non black people who were going to feel -- basing his candidacy, he made and has made special efforts to show he wanted to be president of all the people. he is president of all the people. he is not going to engage in any sort of racial favoritism. that is when i say he has overcome his blackness.
