john f. kennedy. the smithsonian american art museum hosted this 90 minute event. >>> good evening. did you know that john f. kennedy was the most photographed leader of his day? this may not surprise you since he used photography strategically to share his values and his vision for america. it was also the golden age of photography in america and that is why this subject is of interest to us at the smithsonian american art museum and hopefully you. here at the museum we focus on telling the stories of the american experience from folk art to photography as well as painting and sculpture and crafts and media arts. our exhibition, american visionary, john f. kennedy's life and times, which you can view on the second floor in the graphic arts gallery is a premier event among many organized by the kennedy presidential library in this centennial year. i am stephanie stevish, the director of the smithsonian american art museum and saam is what we call ourselves for short. you're in for a special treat thi

one of the reasons we do this not just with john f. kennedy but other political leaders, it helps bind us together. i also think in this particular case it's an extraordinary story. president kennedy had a marvelous sense of humor. i suspect that if he were with us today, if he had lived to be 100, he will make some remark about having overstayed his welcome. but we recognize this extraordinary day 100 years ago that he was born in brooklyn in 1917. because of some of the things congressman hoyer said and you that referenced, that we saw in the film, i think he inspired us. he inspired americans. he reminds americans it seems to me of an age when it was possible to believe. this is powerful to me especially as a recent citizen of this country. reminds americans of an age when it was possible to believe that politics could speak to our highest moral yearnings. could be harnessed to our highest aspirations. and that's important. that's certainly one of the reasons why i think we celebrate him. >> i agree with everything fred just said. anniversa

and john f. kennedy. many of the events he was present at and tragically i was in dallas when he was assassinated. why this exhibit here in the american art museum at this time? well, it's the centennial of his birth. a hundred years ago he was born. how do you put an exhibit like this together, where do you start? first you start with a few researchers. and we collected actually 34,000 photographs of jfk and his family. it took about six months. and it became the basis of a very important book. that we published with harper collins. and from those 35,000 pictures and the 400 some odd pictures in the book we were able to select 77 photographs that we felt told the story of his life and times. jfk was a modern president. and john f. kennedy was one that saw america place in the world. he was a man who understood history. he served in world war ii. he understood the issues of civil rights. he understood many of the conflicts that were starting around the world. he was a man with a vision and this exhibit ki

this is the centenary of john f. kennedy and the centenary of arthur schlesinger, both born in 1917 but in a curious way, they don't seem like contemporaries and in many ways they work. because solicitor was fast tracked through school, it means that although he was at harvard, he wasn't in the same year as john f. kennedy, he was in the same year as kennedy's older brother. and i think that that relationship always has a about it a kind of a curious quality of both being an insider but not part of the kennedy circle. and ultimately i think the same thing brings them together is not some of the usual things, throwing the football at hyannisport and so on. it is actually the relationship as a historian that kennedy loved his history, was a writer. thought of himself as a historian so where they really bonded was over history. >> we are going to talk a bit about this and i hope over the course of our conversation and during the q and a to what extent do you think president kennedy was comfortable sharing his thinking with arth

john f. kennedy's tax cuts were across the board. as were ronald reagan's. when we were all in high school back in the late '70s and early '80s, we had this thing called the misery index. which combined inflation with the unemployment rate. and which actually was closely correlated to crime rates. meaning if the misery index was very, very high, crime rates would go soon to follow. ronald reagan and paul volcker, the chair of the federal reserve at that time, broke the back of the misery index. at one time, the misery index i think under carter was close to 19%. it hasn't been above 10% since the close of the reagan administration. and that is because of the dramatic economic revolution that took place. and the unprecedented basically 20-year prosperity economic boom, the biggest in world history and our country that took place from ronald reagan through bill clinton. so i beg to differ. i think that there -- >> there was a huge recession -- i'm sorry, there was a huge recession after president george h.w. bush. that's why clinton got elected. you're forgett
