obviously, this is the john f kennedy administration. john f kennedy political career began after world war two when he was elected to congress and it wasn't always a straight path. he was someone who had the impulse to do the right thing as, as kathleen put it, but also was balancing that against political pragmatism. talk a little bit about that. the john kennedy. yeah, it's exactly the case. i think. i think he was a person largely free of personal prejudice. i write a little bit about this in volume one of the biography. i'm going to flesh this point out in the second, second volume, there's lots of evidence, john, that he tended to treat people the same jfk did regardless their station in life, regardless of skin color and so forth. so there's that. and that's evident early on as he's running for congress. it's early. it's evident the house and in the senate. but have to balance that against what i guess i would call an intermittent attention to racial injustice and and so the daily plight of african-americans was not something that

john f. kennedy! to win the nomination, they must get an outright majority. anced operation any candidate in either party had ever had at a national convention. bobby kennedy was the campaign manager. he's tough, he's brass, and he can be mean, and he is leading the vote-counting on the floor of the convention. [naftali] johnson believed that he'd win. kennedy was worried. he thought he had it sewn up. but he wasn't certain of it. 'there were many senior democrats suggesting that he couldn't win in november. in a surprise move, to heal party wounds, kennedy names as his running mate... ...lyndon b. johnson. one of the smartest thinks that kennedy did was to make l.b.j. his running mate. he had the wisdom to know that he needed texas and he needed southern votes, and l.b.j. was able to deliver texas. have an experience today like that in my memory, not since we were released from school after john f kennedy was assassinated in the world seemed very quiet. there was a hush sort of in the air that the hurly burly of the day had given away to some other thing. in 1963, it was of sadness. in 1968, it was a fear. and we as a bunch of white kids walking home from from our school there in west oakland, in the hills of oakland, we were afraid that the black people were coming to get us because we had killed martin luther king. so you're both a essentially afraid of each other, not knowing, you know, the other existed. but these stories grow in your mind how when, when fear can build up like calluses. how did you decide each of you to stand it down and take a different route. you go first. i'm well. i. i was i reaped the benefit from living in oakland. near berkeley, in san francisco. oakland. i knew i grew up riding the bus. the public public transportation with everybody of color in the city. there was always asians. there are always latinos. there was always blacks, there was always whites on
