on the one side, you have john fetterman, on the democratic side, john fetterman, who's embraced running a moderate. on the republican side, you have a lot of candidates who are trying to kpras the trumpian mantle. the funny thing is, though, however these primaries shake out, pennsylvania elects moderate general election candidates. so whatever this pallet of extremes produces, you may see those candidates trying to run towards the center in the general election. pat toomey, while avowed ly conservative, is no fire-breathing conservative. tom wolf who's leaving office this year, while progressive, is also no fire-breathing extremist, and those are the kind of candidates that those pennsylvanians seem to go for. >> how much do you think the popularity or lack thereof of the president plays in pennsylvania. >> you know, sure. this is a state for republicans, where the former president's name still carries a lot of sway. he has not yet weighed in on this candidate field in the prm primary. democrats are running against him in their fund-raising. republicans are running towards him. at leas

. >> so pennsylvania's lieutenant governor john fetterman joins me now. good to see you again.'s under these circumstances. this could have been a whole lot worse, and we are so glad it wasn't. first, tell us about the people who were hurt. how are they doing? >> sure, i mean just to set the stage for your viewers, this is one of the most critical bridges, you know, in pittsburgh. it allows you to move between two major neighborhoods of regent square and squurl hill. in fact, i drove over the bridge just yesterday. there was a port authority bus on it and a couple vehicles when it collapsed. thankfully, there was a two-hour delay for the public schools, so there weren't nearly the kind of volume of cars, so we got lucky in that sense as well, too. but it was surreal. it was a complete collapse. it wasn't a partial or where a segment of the bridge just fell down. it was a complete collapse. >> wow. i mean, the images of these drone shots are really just incredible. president biden toured that damage. you were there with him. he was already scheduled to be in pittsburgh today to

competitive senate race in pennsylvania, you are in this democratic primary where lieutenant governor john fetterman is seen as your biggest competitor. how do you see that race playing out? >> well, like i said, on the democratic side, i really still believe to my core that we're a mature political party that is once again going to make a decision about who is most likely to win the general election. and that's it. given what's on the line with january 6th, voting rights, a woman's right to choose. all the issues that are headline issues in 2022. i think it's going to be similar to 2020 when our party picked biden over competitors who might have been more popular on social media but didn't have the same chance of beating trump and when we nominated congressional candidates who are veterans, moderates and pillars of their community who stood the best likelihood of winning the election and delivering us the majority. the key for our party is to realize that formula has delivered us some of the most progressive american legislation in american history already. without even getting to build back better
