very much for being with us. >> thanks for having me. >> what can you tell us about the work of john ford? >> well, ford was one of the most respected directors in hollywood, probably the most respected director before the war. between 1939 and 1941 he went on kind of an unmatched tear in hollywood making "the grapes of wrath," "how green was my valley," "stagecoach," "drums along the mohawk," just a set of movie that is gave him the reputation as one of the most intelligent and serious minded directors. he was also the most prescient of the five directors i write about in realizing war was inevitable inevitable. three months before pearl harbor, ford was already in uniform. he felt war was coming, and he also understood hollywood really needed to be prepared. he had gotten the navy to agree almost a year before the war to let him create something that came to be known as the field photo unit. it was a sort of -- intended as an auxiliary in which he recruited cameramen and soundmen and film editors from hollywood studios who would spend their weekends and nights training to do things like

john ford, a big entry. why? john ford was a navy groupie, and even though his prewar fame as a movie director had nothing to do with naval subjects. as i recall he was born in maine and grew up on the rockbound coast. so salt water was in his veins early on. and when world war ii started, he basically not on the navy's door and said, here i am, make use of me. he was given a direct commission i think as a lieutenant commander with a film crew, and he had visiting privileges almost anywhere. there's a little-known but superb color documentary that his crew made right after the battle of midway in june of 1942 1942. and he's well-known for that documentary, but less well known is the fact that his film crew was aboard navy and coast guard ships off normandy, and some of the combat footage we see in the tv documentaries were shot by his cameramen. >> it's obvious when you think about it but i was fascinated to see them in debt. a british person, simon fraser, lord love a. he is one of those high land warriors, luck

when john ford who made the battle of midway and the film threw out when shrapnel hit, he surprised manyvie. by leaving something that looks like a mistake in the movie. huston, better than any director from that period under that realness, roughness rawness imperfection, could be taken by audiences as a sign of truth. and even though he faked it he faked it with a powerful understanding of what he felt war really lookeded like. so you know, you can't watch san pietro anymore and take it as truth. i went to the national archives and watched the outtakes the footage that huston didn't use in the movie. it was interesting that he systematically discarded anything that looked too clean, too perfect, too hollywood. that is the mark of a very smart filmmaker and really understood that war movies were going to have to look different than how they had looked until that point. so as a document of filmmaking history, i think it's fascinating, and as a war document as a document of the length -- the lengths to which the army would go, including stretching or ignoring the truth, i think it's also a
