as a teaser, catholic attitudes about pope francis have changed a lot since i was last year? john: we have heard a little bit about that the last few weeks? gregory: yes, just to mention that as an aside. if you look at catholic voters as a whole, what you see is that they are evenly divided, and that in any given election, they can swing back and forth. to supporthey tend democratic candidates, whether for congress or the presidency, by narrow margins. other times, they tend to vote for democratic candidates. that is what you see on the surface. but if you look at beyond the surface, if you look at white catholics, they have been trending for a long time now in a republican direction. theecently as 2008, democratic party had an advantage along white catholics by a percentage point. the share of white catholics who leaned toward the democratic party exceeded the share who defined as the republican category by a point. over the last decades, those numbered south steadily changed. the share of white catholics who identify as republicans have grown, while those who identify as democr
