democratic congressman, john garamendi of california, joins us now.milar to mine, first of all, so thank you for that. he is chair of the armed services subcommittee on readiness. he was briefed today by the biden administration on developments in afghanistan and since we're just among friends here, can you tell me what was covered in your briefing with the biden administration? >> well, everything that they knew at that hour of the morning, which was 9:00 on the east coast. 6:00 here on the west coast. the reality is that everything changed or many, many things changed in the course of this day. they talked about the troops that are going in to take out americans and also other afghan people that worked with the united states. in the intervening time, obviously, the government collapsed. at that point, they would not tell us where ghani had gone or if he was still in the country. perhaps they knew. perhaps they didn't. in any case, shortly there after, we learned ghani had fled and that the government had simply disappeared. i wouldn't say collapsed.

democratic congressman john garamendi is with us now member of the house armed services committee congressman for your time your office succeeded in getting 145 people out: how did you do it >> we did it by working with the state department, working with the military on the ground we have a very very good team, a fellow by the name of aaron latta that has just taken this task on. he has contacts with the military, the sergeants that are running the gates and the state department, so people have called and we've been able to get it done, and i must say, this is a coordinated effort with other members of congress there's a network within congress we share information we share data and sometimes one or another of the members can't get it done, and they will pass it off to somebody that may be able to handle that particular kind of problem, but there's an enormous effort underway, and also the private sector needs to be recognized here many of those charter flights, about a third of all of the evacuees have gone out by other countries by commercial or by charter. so there's an all on effort here
