john gonzalez is live at the national mall where rehearsals are already underway. john: that's right. rehearsals are well underway. tonight is a full dress rehearsal that has almost become as popular as the real show. this is what is happening on the west lawn of the u.s. capitol. this year's performers include barry manilow and casey and the sunshine band. they are on the stage right now working on their set. first street at constitution and independents will open at 3:00 for the public, four hours before the big show. you definitely want to give yourself enough time because with a heightened security this year, lines will be a little longer. we got a chance to speak to casey about performing at the capitol concert for the first time ever. he said this is as good as it gets. >> i am really excited to be here. it is going to be one of the most patriotic moments in my life. i have performed in practically every city in the united states on july 4, and now the nation's capital. it's a blessing. john: casey just performed "shake your booty," and he sounded really good.

it started around 3:15 this morning, and our john gonzalez is first on that scene. it is still causing problems even at this hour. john: you are absolutely right because there are still a number of road closures at this hour including shenandoah, potomac and high feet. you're right up against the yellow caution tape and up close and personal, you can see the extent of the damage. a number of firefighters on the scene as the buildings continue to smolder. during the comment of the night in an already quiet town of harpers ferry, flames ripped through a historic section of building. for buildings, at least one of them 200 years old, or destroyed. eight businesses are a total loss including the private quinn pub on potomac street. >> i could not believe it. i did not think it would be this bad but it just cap burning. jois still unknown. fire crews from several different jurisdictions around the area. more than seven hours later crews were still battling hotspot. >> i think everything is pretty much under control now, just a lot of extra work going through the debris. j

john gonzalez has more on how we got here and how much more time embud might miss. >> this has sort ofeen in the works for a little while now. he had his initial surgery over a year ago and two screws inserted into the bone on his right foot. and the initial recovery was supposed to be about four to six months. and then it was pushed back five to eight months and then a year later a routine ct scan revealed that he had less feeling anticipated at this point. as recently as a month ago, it looked like he was headed for summer league and everything was fine. that routine scan sort of changed the entire picture for embud. he is scheduled to have his second surgery and upcoming season is in doubt. it's murky. no one knows how long it will take to recover from this process. by any measure, no matter how you cut it this is definitely a set back. >>> well how about some strawberries and cream. it was breakfast at wimbledon today. going for a fourth straight major title. the serena slam. keep her dreams of the calendar grand slam alive which hasn't been done since 1988. good thing the trophy l

john gonzalez reports on the complications slowing things down. john: this was a mess yesterday and it sounds like it is going to be a mess the rest of today into tonight. this is bradley boulevard and huntington parkway. we have a huge hole right here in the road and crews are having to do with a few obstacles, not only a sewer line, but a gas line -- that yellow pipe is a gas line that runs directly above and across the ruptured area. usually, with a job like this once the ruptured pipe is exposed, then it takes another 4-6 hours to make the repairs. they have not even gone to that point yet. they are still pumping thousands and thousands of gallons of water out of the area. here to tell us more about the situation is glenn reagins. >> this is certainly a difficult job with the gas line and the storm drain. we have a lot of water to get out of here. the pipe is just at a low point so all of the water is draining in here. about 25 homes without water right now. >> that's correct. we will do our best to get them into service as quickly as possible.

defended himself on his own property, so is the legal issue really what gonzalez did the moment he got there? >> that's the critical issue, johnt moment mr. doyle is certainly entitled to rely on what he saw before. did mr. doyle see mr. gonzalez acting in such a manner that he felt that if this guy follows me only he's going to do something violent? i have a reasonable fear for either myself, my wife, or my home that this guy seeing how mad he was on the road earlier is going to come to my house and hurt me. so the critical question, yes, is what happened at the house, but mr. doyle can certainly' ry on what happened before to justify his belief. >> one other thing that happened at the house that i think is just as unsettling is the fact that he held the wife and his family, gonzales's wife and family at gunpoint until police arrived. what's the legal fallout from that? >> kate, i don't see any defense to that whatsoever. he's obviously not in fear from the wife or the daughter doing anything to him. they're apparently in the vehicle when he pulls out the firearm and gets them out of the vehicle to wait for police. that is ag

john. the ordeal on thursday afternoon when robert doyle and one other got into an encounter on the road. both parties called 911. on his 911 audio, gonzalezollow doyle home. they advise him not to do. once he is outside of the residence, two and a half minutes after the encounter began, shots are fired. doyle can be heard on the tapes. >> my gun is cocked and locked. >> reporter: and doyle shooting gonzalez five times. doyle held gonzalez's family hostage. two of those children under the age of 10 years old. >> i don't know how many times he was hit. the guy kept charging at him. >> they're coming as fast as they can. >> reporter: when the police arrived, doyle was arrested and taken into custody and charged with second-degree murder as well as three counts of assault. i asked police investigators with the citrus county sheriff's office if it complicates the investigation that they told the victim not to pursue the alleged shooter. what i was told is that doyle had the opportunity to not engage the victim and had the chance to go inside his home. for now, doyle has posted his $60,000 bond. we called him and his family. they have not retur
