she is currently the john h. bennett chair of southern letters at the university of south carolina. she received her bachelor's and master's degree in english from washington university and her ph.d. in american literature from indiana university. she has just been named the recipient of the merle curty award for the best book in american history by the organization of american historians, specifically for passage to cosmos and is due to receive the award next month. so, please, welcome professor wahl and, also, please turn off your cell phones. thank you.
